I just read an ad for a English/Japanese translator. $15-$18 per hour. Did a quick search this isn't unsusal pay. Granted this is in Kentucky.
Any jobs that paid much less then you expected (hopefully not your own)? |

Jobs that pay insane that I didn't know about: Web Developers. I was reading last night on Reddit that if you are a web developer with any good skill, their starting salary is $120k up to $180k/yr.

Professor with PhD in engineering. I make more than any of the professors the university has hired in the last 8 years. The pay appears to suck until you become the head of a department or hold an endowment chair position. All the higher paying jobs are politically charged and add no value to the main goal of education.

ETA: On the flip side, I can make as much money as I'm willing to work. Secondary here starts at $30/hour and goes up from there. If I never want to see my family, I could easily make 6 figures, but I'd be working myself to death. |

I figured $20s. $20 is average so only a little low at first glance. Obviously you guys know more about the industry but it is not woefully low.

Out of the multitude of sales jobs out there, some pay incredibly well and some not at all.
I was a sales trainer at a large corp. and the top 5% of the sales force were making $400k/year for a low skill job. Then there's my fiancé who does technical sales for a large multinational food lab company and her pay may touch $100k. But thats only because she is something like 300% to goal. She has a food science degree and her job is skilled. Her job is mostly salary. That above job mentioned is obviously mostly all commission, but still. |

Engineering.
You start off pretty decently, but there's very little headroom. |

Friend of my wife: New graduate BSN/RN from a good school, full time at large hospital, no dependents, after tax withholdings and insurance premiums is bringing home $2000 a month. Having seen what nursing school entails I was shocked it was that low.

Test pilot.
Large pool of applicants for a very limited number of positions, and since the applicants have supplemental income from being retired military, salaries are surprisingly low. |

No shit! Saw an ad for NC Trooper. Starting pay was $30,000 IIRC. Max pay would top out at less than $40,000.! FUCK that! View Quote Pay that low will attract a lot of bully types and increase corruption and misuse of official property. Starting pay in the academy for Kentucky State Police (why does a Commonwealth have state police?) is $16 they just got a raise after a very long time without one. |
