The vapour trails left in the atmosphere by jet aircraft have a significant impact on the weather, according to new research.

Scientists in the United States used the rounding of planes following last year's terrorist attacks to show how temperatures changed when flights were at a standstill.

The strips of cloud left by jets in the sky have long been thought to influence the temperature.
But until now, this has been impossible to measure.

The grounding of flights for three days after the 11 September attacks gave scientists in the US a unique opportunity to see what the weather would be like without these vapour trails.

They compared temperatures at 4,000 weather stations across the country with figures for the previous three decades at the same time of year.

Their findings, reported in the journal Nature, show that the gap between daytime and night time temperatures was more than one degree Celsius larger than normal when flights were at a standstill.

This is thought to be because the jet trails reflect sunlight and trap heat.

That makes the day cooler and the night warmer where air traffic is heavy.

And now for the kicker...

However, [red]the effect is almost certainly outweighed by the global warming influence of greenhouse gases[/red], created by the burning of fuel including emissions from jet engines.

aaaAAAAAaaahhhh!!!

So jet trails simultaneously cool the Earth AND lead to global warming.

But... but this quote from the ORIGINAL press release summarizes it differently:

Averaged over the globe, which is largely free of air traffic, the effect is negligible. "But locally, [red]contrails are equally as significant as greenhouse gases[/red]," says Carleton (one of the original authors).

First of all, it seems like more junkscience where just three days of temperatures are compared with the same days from SOME of the previous thirty years record and out pops a tiny  statistically significant difference.

Second of all, where are contrails mostly concentrated? Over populated, industrialized nations. Where does the effect of "global warming" arise? Over populated, industrialized nations.
Soooooo... shouldn't we fly even MORE flights  and burn even MORE jet fuel in the upper atmosphere to help COUNTERACT this supposed "global warming" down here?? (this all assumes this climatology BS is real)

Lastly and most importantly - this is just a TOTAL MEDIA [s]SLANT[/s] LIE for the Chicken Little, Sky-Is-Falling, Eco-freak, Global Warming, Anti-capitalist, Liberal/Socialist/Bullsh!tter crowd.

* Researcher says, "...contrails are equally as significant as greenhouse gases..."

* Media reports, "...the effect is almost certainly outweighed by the global warming influence of greenhouse gases..."

Why the f@ck even bother doing the research? Just report some bullsh!t lie over and over again and the public will never know. [pissed]

If the public went to junkscience.com they would know the truth.
