One of the most prolific receivers in NFL history is stepping out of his cleats and into his dancing shoes and taking on a new challenge. Former 49ers receiver Jerry Rice was at the training facility on Tuesday but instead of trying to make a comeback on the football field, he was there with his dance partner Anna Trebunskaya.

And no, this isn’t a New Year’s Eve hangover mucking with your eyes. Rice is set to make his dancing debut Thursday night in Los Angeles on ABC’s live television show, “Dancing with the Stars.”

“They approached my agent and we thought it would be something that would be interesting,” said Rice. “It is something that really takes me out of my comfort zone and I felt like it would be very challenging. And that’s been true. It’s very challenging. It’s been more than I expected. Just because you have rhythm doesn’t mean you can ballroom dance and all of that stuff.”

Rice’s longevity in the NFL was a credit to his rigorous training, but the world of dance has found this future Hall of Famer working muscles he never knew he had during his 9am – 1pm daily training sessions with Trebunskaya.

“My wife loves it because she says I’m a whole new guy,” laughed Rice. “It’s muscles I’ve never worked before, so I do stretch a lot and it’s a real workout. Then I’m still trying to work out on top of that and doing my normal routine in the afternoons, but the secret to losing weight, ball room dancing.”
