Not a problem, the Japanese representative in Cairo said. "In democratic countries people's lives and safety should be assured by the government ... so that citizens should not need to possess handguns for self-protection"

The Japanese are bigtime pushers of global gun control at the UN.

Their past (WW2) has had a chilling effect on them for the last 3 generations.  Oddly enough thier military and police personify militarization.  Thier forces are top notch and not to be fucked with.  Plus the Japanese do not have a very violent society among themselves and like Troy said their society even today is no melting pot of diversity.

Before I went to Cobra Gold, I heard about how all badass and hardcore the Thai Army was.
The first exercise we did with them was an all night movement to contact. Our battalion took point and the Thais took up the rear. We all had large rucks loaded with all kinds of dumb shit and the Thais had medium rucks with almost nothing in them.
The Thais couldn't keep up with us. Their whole fucking battalion fell out and we didn't find them till about a day later. Keep in mind this was in their own country on their own terrain that they knew.

The problem is that the Japanese are really one of a kind.

Their culture teaches that hornor is above everything else.
So an very strong insult is "you dishornored your ancestors."

not to mention that crimes don't get reported because it's dishonorable in lots of cases.  Look at the irony there.

not to mention that they have the highest suiside rate of all countries.  I even herd that if you factor their suiside rate and homoside rate and compare it to our suiside and homoside rates they will be about even per population.

Least from what I understand.

Here's a great blog by an American dude that lived in Japan for a long time. Its funny as hell and hespends a lot of time talking about the incompetent police, the hive-mind mentality of the Japanese, and of course the extreme psychosexual perversion that lies just below the surface of Japanese society.
Make sure you check the archives down on the right side of the page. I spent a couple days reading this. It's hilarious.

"It's Japantown, Jake."

Different lands, different rules.  IN Japan's case if I could be assured criminals couldn't easily get and guns couldnt prey on citizens with impunity, I'd support Japan's gun laws too.

But Japan is not America, for good and for bad. Japan's completely different and it's as absurd to think Japans laws would work here vice versa.

You may recall a recent incident in which 2 dozen U.S. Navy sailors worked around the clock for more than a week to recover two 7.62N cartridges that fell out of an H-60 helicopter on its way from Atsugi Naval Air Base to the USS Kitty Hawk.

At the height of this incident, Atsugi NAS worked with local authorities to produce a pamphlet which assured Japanese citizens that "they are being kept informed on the status of the search, and are aware of proper actions to be taken if any bullet or evidence of the possible presence of a bullet is discovered."  Citizens were advised that:

1. The two missing bullets are potentially dangerous if mishandled,
2. If a bullet is found, local police authorities should be contacted immediately,
3. Citizens should not attempt to handle the ammunition themselves.

BOTTOM LINE: When it comes to guns, the Japanese are certifiably, hopelessly insane.

it's cultural differences. Aside from the occasional whack job looney with Sarin Gas, Japan has a relatively peaceful society, and it's their nature to wonder why other countries cannot be as happy and succesful as them. Prosperity usual equats to peace... That's why all the middle eastern countries are over flowing with religious zealots who appeal to broke ass young men with no future: the Jihad movement gives purpose to their otherwise bitter, short, sad lives with promises of happiness in the afterlife.

The whole country is not obsessed with airsoft.
Many prefectures have local laws that make the sale of airsoft unlawful to people aged under 18 or 20.

The situation is similar to the pro-gun VS anti-gun in the US.

Japan is peaceful because they are ethnically "homogenous" if you get my drift. They also value hard work and education. They just have a few quirks involving rampant pederasty, rape, subway groping, etc.
Subway groping is actually an organized sport over there and team members score each other on techique. The idea is to arouse the female vicims before they realize they are being molesterd. They have ranks simlar to karate.
Imagine being a 3rd degree black belt in train groping.

Yeah, its definitely time to make Japanese shadow people on concrete walls again.

I don't think that it is fair to judge a whole nation by the actions of a few.
I have  no stastics, but I am sure that the percentage of people who take pare in subway groping puts them in the ultra-minority.

You wouldn't say that the US is a nation of rapists because of the few rape cases that are reported in the news, would you?

Wrong.
Knives don't even have to be registered.
Actually one can own ceremonial swords if it is blunt without any restrictions.
To own a real sword, one must register it at the police and pay about $40.
The main restrictions are that you can not “open carry ” knives, both blunt or real swords, or carry them around in a public place in a manner in which it can be easily accessed/used.

If it can be classified as art or a historical object it also has to be registered at the local education committee.
Many restrictions are on this type of sword.
For example it must not be removed from Japan, it most not be broken or disfigured intentionally.

Carrying knifes around for self defense is also illegal.

Legal sourcefrom the Japanese Goverment's HP.
Sorry that it is in Japanese but it was the only source that I could find.

Quoted:

All guns are banned in Japan…

Wrong, too.

Almost every adult Japanese can legally own a long gun if the person can pay the $4000 tax per year.
The restrictions on the actual guns are that they must be smooth bore, maximum 5 shots, must be pump or bolt action or muzzle loaded. There are other regulations too.
But it is next to impossible to own a hand gun.

Until the late nineties, child pornography (under the guise of "art") was legal in Japan. Most newstands featured adult publications with pictorials of female children in them. Jap kiddy pornographers would make frequent trips to poor former Soviet countries where people in poverty stricken areas are so desperate for cash that they'll let a photographer snap nude pictures of their kids for a few bucks. I guess all that radiation had the long term effect of turning them into a culture of pervs.

Japanese culture is basically repressive.

That's why they don't want guns in the hands of citizens.

Another reason is historical: only Samurai were allowed with weapons, and during Mejii era the emperor FORBID ownership of weapons, arriving even to forbid firearms.

Why?

Very simple: a katana, to be handled properly and be a menace, needs long years of practice and costed a lot of money, so only nobles and and rich people, the dominant class, can afford it.
A tanegashima musket, one of the first firearms ever circulating in Japan, was easier to use even for ordinary people, and this can put in danger the assets of the social order in Japan: Samurai could be replaced with a more efficient army made by not-Samurai people.

This was reputed untolerable by Japanese rulers and firearms were banned, delaying modernization of the country military for decades.

imho, if they don't  want guns in their streets, for me it is ok: after all Japan are islands. But to bring, through UN, a worldwide ban for firearms is also my affair, and I am managing to keep Japanese well settled in their overpopulated islands and not to spread their antigun mentality.

btw, there was a guy, in a range I used to go, that was an attache' of the Japanese embassy in Italy. He went occasionally to shoot: he was shooting very bad, but you should see his face while he was shooting... I NEVER saw a man with a so biiig smile in his face...
