I don't know why they opened the damn thing. The world would have understood if they had kept it closed this week.

Right back to work on Monday! Dedicated Japanese.

Agreed. Hell, our exchange was closed nearly a week following 9/11, wasn't it?
Link Posted: 3/14/2011 7:35:31 PM EST
Meanwhile, in New York, the Dow Futures are down nearly 300 points.

Exactly WHY Japan should have kept it's market closed. At least for a FEW days. Did anyone really expect them to open on Monday and everything would be fine?

Only because it COULDN'T be open. I went to a conference in late October after the attack, and one of the speakers was a Merrill Lynch honcho who described how the various NYSE, Archipeligo networks, etc all worked to get the market up and running in a week after the attack.

Once it was open, there was a really bad sell off, hundreds of points down in the Dow for 2 weeks.

Do the Asian indexes have the same electronic trading curbs as the US does?

Everything is on sale now.

Imagine that all Japanes exports have to pass radiation testing before being released.

That means all drivetrains manufactured for US-assembled vehicles could be denied, as well as any electronic devices.

This is a mind fuck beyond any mind fuck imaginable

Watching this very closely (In the electronics business). Not so much the radiation tests, just power shortages causing manufacturers to be shut down or on greatly reduced production.

Widespread shortages could be a deathnail to the economy.

Power can eventually be rerouted in their grid to compensate.

But any import "embargo's" will be the hammer upon that deathnail.

And I fear the Trillions of Yen they are injecting to the world economy is just money they won't have for the cleanup.

They are going to have to dump a bunch of US holdings/bonds/etc to generate cash for cleanup.

I'm wondering if big engineering firms like Seimens and Bechtel will make a lot of money off of this in the near future.

Link Posted: 3/14/2011 8:57:57 PM EST
Bechtel is private and has no public stock

get out if you can, but check the drop. don't sell low what you bought high.

Look at a Japan/East Asia fund now and jump in when it's reaalllly down.

My mutual lost over $4000 in the past 12 hours.

Its prospectus suggested investing in Tupperware and Buick, along with mining equipment stocks. Guess which one took a flaming nosedive? (Hint: it involves raw material used in nuclear manufacturing).
