Is this Coca-Cola's response to Pepsi's throwback sodas?
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:13:50 AM EDT
Jew Coke?

I drink the Mexican stuff made from cane sugar. What's up with the Jooooo reference? Is HFCS not kosher and coke makes a kosher version?
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:14:07 AM EDT

Kosher for Passover coke made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup - traditionally one is not supposed to consume corn during Passover.

Maybe the Jew Coke will drive the un-kosher swine flu out of me!

I was over in Israel when the big swine flu hubbub was going on last year - they called it the Mexican flu

I knew nothing of Jew Coke. Too bad there's no Jew Mountain Dew.

So on Fridays I eat catholic fish and now I get to drink Jew coke. Whats next this poor protestant boy is confused
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:35:36 AM EDT
Maybe this will make up for that Mecca Cola I drank 65 years ago.

Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:36:01 AM EDT
So, not made from actual Jews?
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:37:10 AM EDT

Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:37:33 AM EDT
How is it different than Mexican Coke?
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:37:38 AM EDT
We get Mexican coke occasionally, not many Jewish folks in Utah where we shop.

Since when? Corn came from the New World.

I love the Pepsi Throwback but the Mountain Dew Throwback is awful.

Also, all year round we have orange-Jews, pineapple-Jews, and finally grapefruit-Jews.

Love that yellow capped Coke. I guess I could load up the car and go to areas where the less fortunate don't have it.

Being on the border you can get Mexican Coke year round down here. I've never seen passover specific Coke.

I've been able to pick up Mexi Coke (yes it actually says that on the receipt) for the past few weeks. It even comes in glass bottles! I hope it continues!
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:50:27 AM EDT

Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:50:35 AM EDT
Where did you find it?
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 10:52:13 AM EDT
I always stock up. Thanks for the heads up.
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 11:01:20 AM EDT

In short, during Passover, Jews are only allowed to consume unleavened bread (matzah) and must refrain from the bread and grain products that are consumed during the rest of the year. Therefore, any grain product aside from matzah is considered un-kosher (hametz, in this specific example) during the eight days of Passover. HFCS being corn-derived is a grain product. The purpose is to commemorate the unleavened bread the Jews took with them during the Exodus. As they were in a bit of a rush to leave Egypt, there was no time for the bread to rise, thus unleavened bread.

Its an Ashkenazi (Eastern Euorpean Jews) practice. I was always taught that anything sold next to grains in the markets might be contaminated by grains, so we avoid eating those products during passover. A quick google search turns up a similar explanation:

I went to a Sephardic seder last year, they have much better food

HFCS has ground-up cattle and hogs in it, which is not quite Kosher.......literally or figuratively.

Oh I thought you meant this coke...

Costco had it (specifically 'Mexican Coke') like two months ago, but they have not gotten it again since. It was even in glass bottles, so its like twice the price of regular coke (vs Pepsi Throwback and Pepsi being the same price). But it was delicious.

Bringing a bottle to work to reward the good job of the day was a big hit.

If it's a store that caters to Passover it will be in a separate section, lined with white paper. Same with stuff in the deli area, a separate section lined with white paper. All similar to how it would be in a home that keeps Kosher during passover.

You can keep your Jew-Coke (no offense to the religion). I've tried it once and didn't like it. I'll take mine with HFC syrup
Link Posted: 3/7/2010 11:28:46 AM EDT
Does it taste markedly different?

I've been buying throwback Pepsi and Mountain Dew by the pallet, stocking up because one day I know they'll take them from me again.
