After much back and forth about being deployed forward, word came down that the 1st Mardiv needed volunteer physicians to go out with them this Feb for 9 months in the sandbox. Forgetting the old axiom about NAVY ebing an abbreviation for Never Again Volunteer Yourself, I raised the hand and will be leaving for Iraq via 2 weeks at Pendleton Feb 1st!
Ill plan on buying a digital camera (any suggestions?) and will attempt to keep y'all updated...I've never seen a medical doctor's perspective on the AOR posted here, so I hope it will be interesting for you.
Any suggestions on a good knife/multitool, ballistic eyewear (I've seen too many guys come back w/out their vision to risk losing mine), and cut resistant gloves that will still permit me to do such taks as IV placement, etc.
Once I get my APO address, I will give it to one of the mods. I would like a program for the local kids and if anyone would like to donate candy, crayons, etc I will distibute it for you when I'm out and about.
Well, gonna knock off early and break it to the wife and kids.

Just remember your grunt training from when you were a member of the Corps.

Keep you head on a swivel. Always figure there is an armed BG behind every corner. Get yourself a good weapon (NOT just the M-9!) and get qualified again. You may need it one day. Sorry about that Hyppocratic stuff...I don't think it is part of the Holy Koran...and they'd soon kill you as a battalion of grunts.

You can use the high-end old people goggles, or sneak out some surgical eyeshields. Shatter resistant, heat resistante, UV coated, fits over other eyewear, and will make you look "distinctive". Ask your eye doctor or "old people supply store" where you can buy a pair. Don't get the cheapo ones from some rotating turnstyle at Wally-World.

Well, Doc, you couldn't be deploying with a finer unit. I still recall your generous offer to my cousin, who is now in her third year at Bethesda as a medical student (short, half Japanese girl with a French last name).

Antything we can do to help, give a shout. If you are interested in helping/collecting stuff for schoolkids, I am sure I can get my kids school and Cub Scout pack involved. Let me/ARFCOM know.

If you're looking for a good, small digi cam, look at the Canon Poweshot Elph series. I have an SD400 and it's awesome and can fit in a breast pocket without being cumbersome.

In my opinion they're not the rule but the exception. I've heard about 1000 reports of Iraqi kids being just like our kids. They want to live, play and go to school. Well, more play and less school...

I think it's a great idea. I for one would love to contribute to such an endevour. However, you'd have to post pics of the kids getting the candy and crayons. I think we need to see more of that.
