I am not advocating anything here.

The last time the Union divided, it was between "slave" states and Free states.

If it happens again, the divide will be between:

"Citizen" States vs "Subject" States.

is urban, densely populated areas, states with large urban areas as opposed to less densely populated areas, states with smaller percentages of urban areas (large cities).

the denser the population, the greater the organs of the state feel impelled to impose control, probably because the denser the population, the more concentrated crime is.

the nation has been moving from a mostly rural to a mostly urban demographic for over 100 years. as the rust-belt, left coast and old midwestern manufacturing states urbanize and their populations grow in comparison to the less densely populated southern, southwestern and western states, the more power they yield nationally, and the more the politicians that come from those areas feel compelled, as they are locally to control the national population, much to the consternation of 'free' states..

europe and asia show the way, and its only a matter of time until this country evolves into the same sort of government with the same control and limited freedoms of its citizens.

Basically it should go by county and how they voted.

There is no South. No North. No West. No East. There is no Missouri Compromise this go round.

That divide you speak of, could be as simple as across the street or down the road.

ETA?..seems to be more of an "urban vs rural" problem to me.  Most of those blue spots are dominated by a city.

I think the country will divide neatly into two halves:

the half where the citizens have free elections to vote for their government representatives

vs

the half where free elections take place to determine who will be the government representatives.

Oh, the bloodshed and carnage awaiting us all with nasty big teeth!

this should be called:

"A map of where they used to make stuff in factories and now there are slums vs where they grow food"

see the blue parts of PA?  they used to make stuff there and now they make welfare babies.

the red parts are farms and trees

that will be a massive shock to the southerners who envision PA being full of UN troops with nipple rings and assless chaps

This.

The civil war was not labelled a war over slavery by the south. It was a war over states rights and the ability of the Federal Government to be able to dictate what states were and were not allowed to do.

Interestingly enough, before the civil war we were referred to as These United States or United States of America to The United States of America. Shifting from being a group of states that share a common government to a single entity.

Under the same roof in many cases.  Teenage children will be ratting out their fathers for having illegal assault rifles.  It will be the right thing to do in their minds because of the leftist ideology they learned in school.

Generally because of unions.

That said, a lot of the blue in those areas, like their guns...

The thing is... it is only from a perspective that you view Citizen vs Subject.

Looking at it from an equality point of view for Gay or abortion/women's rights... the 'free' states in one... would likely be the 'subject' states in another.

THIS is the problem... being 'free' or being 'subject' is only a perspective...

Libertarian 'FREEDOM of CHOICE' is different than both. And abhorred by both...

Slavery, didn't you get the memo?

ALL "red" states still keep slaves, and it's all Bush's fault that the red states keep slaves.
