AZA (Reuters) - Israel killed the top bombmaker and rocket engineer of the Hamas militant group on Thursday in an airstrike in Gaza City, days before a key parliamentary vote on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites)'s Gaza pullout plan.

Medics and witnesses said a missile from an Israeli drone slammed into a vehicle and killed Adnan al-Ghoul, a senior Hamas leader and master bombmaker for the Islamic militant group who has been on Israel's most wanted list since 1987.

The army had no immediate comment on the attack, which also killed Ghoul's aide, Hamas gunman Imad Abbas. Israel has often targeted militants in air strikes during four years of violence.

Ghoul was Hamas's top engineer who manufactured explosive devices and weapons that were used in dozens of attacks against Israelis, Palestinian sources said.

Violence and political tensions over Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to withdraw settlers and soldiers from Gaza by the end of 2005 have risen ahead of a parliamentary vote next week that could make or break his government.

Palestinians called Ghoul "the father of the Qassam rocket," referring to the type of rocket Gaza militants have fired frequently into Israel during the past few months. Two Israeli toddlers were killed in such a rocket strike last month.

Ghoul survived two previous Israeli assassination attempts in the past two years, one of which killed his son, also a Hamas militant. Ghoul was also the right-hand man of top Hamas leader Mohammed Deif, who remains a prime target on Israel's list.

Dozens of Hamas gunmen and supporters who rushed to the morgue to see the bodies of the dead fired rifles in the air and shouted for revenge.

"The reaction will be painful and an unforgettable lesson to the Zionist enemy," said spokesman Mushi al-Masri.

That is definately a big kill for the Israelis. I'll bet there are going to be all sorts of assaults against them in retaliation though.

They are going to attack the Israelis anyway, so the IDF might as well kill as many as they can when they have the opportunity.

The target's name was Adnan al-Ghoul. What more appropriate name for an Arab terrorist could you ask for?

I have always wondered if the Hamas leadership is selected by drawing straws?
"You got the short straw, you're leader. BTW, a Hellfire sounds like this"

Remember, arabs aren't terrorists.
They are, insurgents, gunmen, policemen, etc.
Never terrorists.
Carry on.

Durka Durka Jihad Mohammad!

Look out for the car swarm!

I suppose Hammas meetings nowadays look something like this:

First Hammas guy: "I'm not gonna be leader, your the leader."

Second Hammas guy: "Allah be blessed, I am not the leader, inshalla it should be the eldest"

Third Hammas guy (31 year old crapping his pants): "Un, Ok, I'll be the leader. I'm not getting any action anyway, I guess those skanky 72 raisons, er, virgins sound pretty good about now"

(Everyone scoots their chairs away from Third Hammas guy).

why dont the just drop a MOAB on all the guys in the street mourning after their leader gets killed. Seems more efficient to me.
