I have a 98 Windstar. I hear at low roaring grinding noise from the front when driving. I mostly hear it when going 20-30 MPH. When I speed up past 35 it gets quieter so that I don't notice it as much, and when I turn I can't hear it either. From what I have read it sounds like it is a bearing. No change when breaking. If so what is a reasonable cost to have them replaced? Stealership wants $500 bucks.

Sounds like bearings to me. Bearings are fairly easy to replace. I'm no mechanic, but with a guide it's fairly easy. Save your money.

After driving for a bit, touch the center of your wheel hub.  If its stupidly hot, it's a bearing.

Put a little steering in slowly left and right.  The sound should get worse one way - and go away the opposite if it is wheel bearings.

Is the hub getting hot?

Get the wheel in the air, and then grab it. Does it move back and forth? Bearings.

Yup, wheel bearing.

Find another mechanic if you can't do it yourself. It shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks.

Get to the speed that its the worst. Then slightly swerve left to right.

Does the noise change?  Whichever way the wheel is pointed, USUALLY it's the opposite side causing the noise. Usually.

If you swerve right, it loads the left bearings for example.

This is how a mechanic will check them.  It will seem like the wheel is loose or has play in the hub.

This is pretty much what happens.

It also usually feels like you are driving in 4 wheel drive...

I wouldn't waste time replacing bearings....you can get the entire hub assembly for probably less than $100 and swap them out in 15 minutes. Breaking the hubs down to replace bearings will take significantly longer and isn't worth the hassle unless you are terribly strapped for cash.

Yeah, kinda does feel that way (I have an Jeep XJ).

Dumb question, does the hub assembly come with the bearings installed in it, just swap them out?

I have replaced several hubs/bearings and they are easy to swap out.  If it is a drive wheel you will need a torque wrench.

Might be sealed units anyway. Had a rear one go out on my '99 Caravan, and it was a replace the whole thing deal. Not expensive, but it was seized on there so I paid a shop to do it. Think it ran me under $300, including parts to replace both sides. My thought was if the one went out, the other couldn't be that far behind.

All of mine have been an assembly.

I suggest the above test as well.

Yep, everything is there.

ETA - the hardest part will probably be getting the old one off. Last ones I did were locked up tight. 10 minutes with a pneumatic chisel finally busted them loose. The good thing is you don't really have to be too careful when your beating on them...they are going in the garbage anyway.

Thanks for the help guys. This week I'm KILLED for time. So I'm looking for a shop to do it. I watched a couple videos on it, it doesn't seem too hard, but if I can get someone to do them reasonably I will. Thanks again.
