Perception Carolina 14 with rudder.  $325 from a local guy.
It's the orange and yellow one

We've been wanting to get into kayaking and they'd be used a couple times a year.

Really wasn't planning on getting one at this time but it seems like a decent deal.

Yes it's a good deal.
Perceptions are excellent kayaks.

What do I look for when looking at a used kayak?

I assume look for wear on the bottom?
Complete noob...

What about the aftermarket rudder?
It's a huge plus for me but how do I tell if it'd installed correctly?
It's mounted on the top, not below the water line.

The rudder may be mounted on top, but should flip down when needed.  Pretty good deal on open water paddles.

What are you going to use it for?
Fishing? Where?

Lakes? Rivers? Coast?

Some yaks will perform better in certain areas than others will.

Perception does make a good yak though. If you're just starting out that's a good deal. Didn't read the ad but if it doesn't come with an anchor trolley that's usually one of the first things I add to my yaks.
A good comfortable seat is a HUGE plus too.
