I like mine.

For 3 gun and to be competitive you need a semi auto like a Benelli or Remington 1187P.

If you shoot heman you need a 308 rifle, pump action shotgun and a 45.

Even if you can pump fast?

Great shotty, but that's a way too pricey.  It's not even an A1.  You should be able to get a 590 for less than $400.

ETA: Lots of people use pumps for 3-gun.

Not really a good choice to be competitive. A Rem 1100 / 11-87, Benelli Super 90 or a Win Super X-2 would be a better choice. But if this all that you have available or all the money you can deal with right now, sure, use it, get the hang of the sport and decide if you want to keep shooting 3 gun. If you decide you want to get more competitive, then you can sell the Mossburg and get something better.

Benelli's are probably the fastest semi auto shotgun out.  Even a Saiga 12 gauge is fast as hell.

if you put many rounds through it, it will wear out.   that is the big difference between it and the 870- aluminium receiver vs steel receiver.

So the Rem is better?

I used an M590 in the Marines and loved it.  It was old and worn, but that only made it better as everything was loose and fast.  The sucky thing is the damned safety, way too unnatural to use.

read this  good comparo

If that doesn't give you the info to make your own decision, google "remington 870 vs mossberg 590"

lotsa good info out there, sometimes it just pays off to google rather than ask arfcom.

personally i just always bought the rem when they would go on sale at bi-mart, never really saw the 590 for sale very many places.   so i only have i think 4 or 5 870's and no 590s.   but that is just me

To be competitive you need a competitve gun and while a 590 is a decent gun, it will not put you in the running.   You need one of the semi-auto guns.  Light and fast.

A Benelli M190 will put out all 8 rounds under 2-3 seconds.  With the pistol grip and proper hold you can put most of the pellets on target.  The recoil can be harsh under those type of circumstances.

The Brian Enos boards has a whole catagory dedicated to 3gun shotguns.

I like my Winchester SX2.    Remis are nice but supposedly are prone to breakage when lots of rounds get put thru them, and Benneli's have a tad more recoil IMO.
3 Gun stuff is as addictive as crack and you will find yourself jonesin' for the next match you can find.

True, they should split up the SG into semi and auto.

fwiw, I've got a 590A1 which I'm happy with.

I think so and not much more expensive. Mossys actions are kinda clunky.

The 590A1 is a sweet shotgun. I have shotguns of several makes and models and I have personally grown to love the Mossberg. I have an 870 as well and I actually prefer the action of my Mossberg 500s and 835.

I think the 590A1 would be a good choice for 3 gun.

Only if loosing is one of the goals.

I think the action is relatively tight.
