So here I am eating a salad and wondering "so what the hell is the point of me eating this exactly?"

IIRC Cellulose can't be broken down by the human digestive tract, and thats pretty much all lettuce is. So other then the nutrients in the dressing, is salad literally just a waste of time? Filler?

Fiber!

Lettuce is rich in carbohydrates. Very little protein. Almost no fat.

Yeah, leafy veggies (including lettuce) give you fiber (so do many other foods though), which helps keep your guts cleaned out and healthy.

No fiber results in:

Log jams are nothing to be made fun of, thank you very much.

Leaf lettuces are great. Iceberg not so much. I think the rule is... the more it resembles a weed, the better it is for you :)

romanie yes, iceberg only if you eat the box

They have Vitamin A and some Vitamin C. Macronutrients from lettuce won't keep you alive but mixed with other foods it does provide some vitamins and minerals.

I'm a meat lover here from WAY back, but a good salad (no iceberg) can have kale, endive, cabbage, romaine, red & green leaf lettuce, butter, bibb and a dozen others. It all has some goodness besides fiber. Add some carrots, cucumbers, olives, asparagus spears, artichoke hearts. sliced boiled egg, BACON!, ham, turkey, shrimp, crab or what the hell ever in any combination and you are good to go. I crumble crackers on top instead of croutons and make the whole mess black with freshly ground black pepper.

ETA:
tomatoes, peas, garbanzos, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, cheese, etc....

Dark green yes...try spinach.

Green leafy vegetables are probably the healthiest thing you can eat.

There is tons of different vitamins and minerals, plus numerous phytochemicals.

Compare the difference in nutrition in 100 calories of green leafy vegetables, and 100 calories of hamburger.

Lettuce contains the most water of any vegetable, including watermelon.

Yep

Cheap lettuce is just a "filler".

Might as well go out and eat your front yard to get the same nutritional value.

Stay away from iceberg lettuce and you can chomp away like a herbivore knowing you're extracting some degree of nutrional value.

Very little of anything, especially iceberg. The tip is, the more colorful, the better it is for you.

Iceberg lettuce has almost no nurtritional, but there are that do. Such as Butter leaf and others in that family.

The darker green the better for you, when it come to veggies, is how I was taught.

Butter lettuce has about 15 calories per 100 grams. Iceberg is under 5, I think.

Iceberg lettuce is crunchy water.
Go for the Romain letuce

Even better than salad, take it everyday for a week and you will feel like a new man. I'm NOT joking, a big dose several days in a row and it will scrape out your gut, NO it doesn't hurt, in fact the BM is quick and easy.

Spinach is much better.

No matter what you put on lettuce, you can say "Of course it's healthy, it's a salad!"

You're over-generalizing.

Iceberg is 'green' and 'leafy'...and pretty much a nutritional dry-hump.
