Don't laugh. Serious question.

I have had a hankering for a crossbow for years. This is not a Darryl thing. I have a limited budget - does anyone know if there is one worth owning in the price range of $250?

Awaiting lulz and hopefully some positive comments.

What will you be using it for?  Hunting?  Just target shooting?

I'm using this one for the first time this season. I think it will be good to go, but the dot scope is a tad on the cheap side.

Barnett Recruit compound sells for $299.99 and comes with the cocking rope, red dot &3 bolts.
Pretty good bow and damn close to your price range.

If you're near Monroe, Cabela's carries them. (I grew up downriver)

I would really advise against a Horton.  With the company going out of business there is no warranty service now, and spare parts will soon be gone.

I really don't need a crossbow, but if someone winds up recommending one in OPs price range worth a darn, I may be getting one anyway.

I second this, and I also would not get a 125. Get a 175. Much better trajectory and it's not bad to cock at all with the cocking ropes. It's not like a bow that you need to hold back.

I like the Wicked Ridge models, but you're looking at $450 for an entry level. But they're made by TenPoint, which is a $1k+ crossbow.

Take that for what it is worth

Bought a Horton Yukon XL in 06 for 219 at Bass Pro. I'm sure they cost way more now. It was a nice crossbow.

From my own crossbow comparison guide, I think Barnett Jackal would be the perfect one(also good quality ) with your budget.

And you don't have to feel that way, a lot of people choose entry level for hunting season.

A lot have recommended Barnett, and they are definitely in your price range,  BUT, just make sure that you thoroughly inspect your crossbow before buying, especially with the Barnetts.  I looked at 4 different Barnett bows before I bought my TenPoint, and all 4 had issues.  The rail not being straight/true was probably the biggest, also found uneven limbs and a few other flaws as well

Got one for twenty bucks at the flea market once.

Mom caught me with it.  She just gave me that look, and said "If you shoot the cat with that thing you'll never forgive yourself."

The styrofoam package with the target on the back?  Not a sufficient backstop...

Cured that whole crossbow thing right up though.  Maybe you should try that first, it's usually cheaper, depending on what the pound gets for a new cat these days.

ETA: This is it!!!!

I guaran-damn-tee there's a target on the back of the package. Man, *what* a piece of shit.

And they're pretty heavy for what they are. I gave them a fleeting look and decided that the "coolness factor" of using an AR lower for part of a crossbow meant nothing to me.

Know a guy that had one.  Broke on the first shot.  I forgot what sheared, but, he sent it back, they covered it.

Second shot, broke again.

For 1000.00 just to look cool... uh, no.

I'm also curious how the state game laws would come in to the play.  even with the bow upper, it is still a legal rifle.  Texas does not allow a rifle during bow season.

Well this thread is a pisser I have a Horton HD150 which has been a very good unit I guess I have to buy something else since it looks like there are no parts around. It sure would be nice to find a spare set of cables and a string.

Strings/cables for Horton bows (except the Fury)are available through Viper X.

I have a 2012 Horton Havoc that I absolutely love. Supposedly, the Havocs are very solid, but if anything other than strings/cables go bad, I'm screwed.

Daryl got a new crossbow in the middle of season 2:

-when Rick, Carl and Michoan met up with (and shot) that dude in Rick's old home-town, they left with lots of weapons and ammo (including the new crossbow).

I'd skip the red dot and get a calibrated crossbow scope... regular crosshairs 20 yards, next horizontal line 30 yards, then 40, etc.

Q to those of you with crossbow experience: does it make more sense to work with a set of sights, a red dot, or a scope with an arrow drop reticle?

Are you going to hunt with it or shoot at various distances? If so, scope with arrow drop reticle. If you're just going to shoot for fun at 20 yards in your backyard, anything will work.
