Most deployed Air Force members in the theater deployed with A2s.

Most all Marine divisional units deploy with A4s and M4s, but there are a few that A2s left in those units. Wing and Group units have mostly A2s

my first trip the A2 was still predominate, by my 2nd trip it was mostly A4s...so my question is. are these all new rifles or is there a retrofit program like the air force's A1 to A2 program of the past?

Some of us aren't even that advanced yet. Our planes still have GUU-5P's on them. They're awesome though. Featherlight with aluminum stocks and slick-side uppers. |

plenty of units still using a2's, i had one in 04, and the unit im in now still has em. for the most part if you arent infantry or cav you will most likely have an a2. some of my a2s are a1 conversions, with the word burst on a metal plate inserted into the reciever.

The Army is also using the M16A4. Depending on the unit type, and the Soldier's position, the A2 is being replaced by the A4 or the M4. It's sort of wierd, but some National Guard units are getting the new stuf before some Active units. But then, the infantry and combat engineer units of a Guard enhanced brigade, especially one that was/is on a deployment list will probably have more need and use of them than say a commo repair shop. We started getting ours just over two years before our supposed deployment for peacekeeping in Bosnia. Then the OIF deployment happened much sooner.

I remember a few years ago when the GAU-5s were modded to GUU-5P, I think it was just a re-barrel job (M4 profile). Interestingly enough, the GAU-5 was considered a sub-machine gun, and I believe it was marked as such. B_S |
