Worth getting one for $40 new? Also posted in the tactical gear forum. Kinda need some opinions quick. Have some extra funds right now and wife hasn't got scent of it yet.

It is hot as hell and I pretty much hate mine. But I only ever plan to use it in competitions and crap so whatever.

a link would be nice but sight unseen i would tell you that chest rigs are more comfy
|
|
i definitely think heat would be an issue in that.
go modular, buy something quality once. |

Dammit! I just bought one for $49.99 plus shipping. Last week.
I like it. Doesn't seem too hot (but then again, I've only had it during the winter). Seems really sturdy. I haven't given it a workout yet, but so far I like it, especially since I only paid about $60 shipped. |
|
I had an Omega. It chafed my neck and only carried 3 magazines. It was very good quality construction for the price. I like my SKD chest rig better.

what do you plan to use it for? Range work mainly. BO/SHTF standby duty too. |

Wore one for a year through a European winter and summer.
Doesn't work well with an Interceptor vest. The rifleman model holds up to 12 mags and is "decent" on comfort except for the aforementioned neck chafing. Like any vest it does trap heat (good in winter, bad in summer) but for limited use (matches, holy crap it's a tornado! type stuff) it's not that bad. I far prefer a chest rig for mounted operations or patrolling, but there are worse options out there. $40 for one is pretty decent, and if it fills a hole in your equipment vacuum, it's worth picking up. Blackhawk quality can be good or crappy depending on the age and design but the Omega (a ripoff of the old Eagle design) is usually made pretty decently. I had 400+ members of a unit wearing them daily at one time and they held up pretty well to abuse. If you're buying "forever" modular/MOLLE is the way to go since you can set it up how you want it, but a Omega can be used as a spare rig for visitors/family (they're pretty flexible in size) in that case. It's very quick to put on, I once, from the front passenger seat of a uparmored Humvee, while driving at high speed on a curvy road, ditched the vest, pulled on an Interceptor with plates, sealed up, put back ON the Omega vest, inside of about 45 seconds, which says much for my flexibility and the ease of donning a "jacket" type design. |

Very nice write-up. I'm gonna order one now. It's basically going to be a spare/backup rig. Thanks again. |

I'd bag the vest idea and grab one of those SKD/Eagle chest rigs and be done with it.

I used one back when that was the only choice in gear. It worked fine for what it was.
Now there are better options, but I keep mine around as an extra rig. |

I can't seem to order from LAPolicegear without adding extra shit. Ordered 2 Wellco hot weather tan boots for $18 each, a tactical bailout bag for $20, and a Jimi wallet for $12. I know there are better options out there (already have a chest rig set up). This one will just be a "spare". |
|
It was made to be worn with a collared shirt (BDU or police type) so if you wear a t-shirt only and the Omega, your neck will not be happy.
The 3-mag pouch on the left side, multiple general purpose pouches on the right side model is probably the best mix of "useful" as well as ammo carriage. My 12-magazine-model (six mag pouches) meant my right side had random crap stuffed in mag pouche (gloves, light, etc). A Eagle Universal chest rig or a TT MAV is my personal pick without knowing the situation or setup for a "fits anything" type rig, but the Omega will work well enough. |
|
No, get a eagle chest rig from SKD. I had an omega I got from some deal Galls had that was posted here. It hung in my closet for 4 years and then I sold it.

I have one. Wore it one afternoon with only a hydraback with 100 oz. of water in it. Most uncomfortable thing I think I've worn. I had hoped that the vest idea would make for a comfortable way to carry some weight, but it didn't work out.
I still got it. Merlin |

I wear one as part of my required work gear. They are not unbearably hot and you can loosen it to wear an ice vest under it. I do that here in Florida. It is a very good vest and if it is a Blackhawk and the same one in the link that is a great price. We don't carry ammo in ours (flight paramedic gear) but I find it very useful for everything I need. The only problem I had is if you want to place a Motorola radio in one of the large ammo pockets you will have to cut the elastic tension band or it will constantly key your mike. Found this out the hardway after one to many open mike incidents.

I have the omega vest with the holster built in and would opt for a chest rig instead. The vest is a bit cumbersome and you're stuck with the amount of mag pouches and pockets that are on there. YMMV
|
|
I have hte one with 6 huge mag pockets.
it is what it is. not modular, but works fine. plus it'll fit ANY mag. |
|
I've got one –– I consider it my SHTF/zombies take over the Earf/insert TEOTWAWKI situation here vest.
I have a 3 mag chest rig for competition/class, but the vest is only for a major bad situation where I need a metric shit ton of ammo. It is pretty well built for such an inexpensive vest. |

Sure it only carries 3 mags, but also has a pistol holster and 3 more mag pouches for that... It will actually hold 6 AR mags. Two per pouch. The fit is very tight but it works. You can only use regular USGI 30rd mags; PMags are too thick. |

yeah mine can take 12 AR mags.
but its better used for 6 oddball mags, like G3, FAL, AK, etc. biiiiig pockets. |

It's definately a hot piece of gear during the summer. I've worn mine during a class last year. I sweating at first. Once I broke myself down to a single cut off t-shirt beneath it - I was fine. The vest was drenched though - soaked it when I got home.
If you live in a colder climate it's fine. Not sure there's a lot of gear out there that'd keep you 'cool.' You'll sweat no matter what you're wearing. Less is more I suppose. The Omega vest is definately secure though. Doesn't move anywhere when it's on. I like it alot, but it does have it's limitations. Lately I've been using my Bauer-esque bag from BCM. |

I only have experience with the Omega vest that has 3 AR pouches on the LH side and accessory/tool pouches on the right. The AR pouches are VERY tight but you can get 2 mags to fit in each one. You may think at first you got hosed but trust me, they will fit. It helps prevent rattling when they are jammed in there tightly. |

Already ordered the tan one. What color is yours? If it's black and I end up liking the one I ordered, I might take you up on your offer. |
|
mine is black.
I went to a plate carrier for bump in the night use. The omega is a backup for potential course usage where all I'd need is lots of mags at the ready. |
