High School Football Players Accused Of Gang Rape

Three In Custody, One More Negotiating Surrender

Aug 26, 2004 9:22 am US/Pacific
LOS ANGELES (AP) Three members of a high school football team have been charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl but some school officials have complained that authorities have not told them enough about the investigation.

The victim, a student at Fairfax High School who was enrolled in night classes, went into a bathroom Aug. 2 where four teens, all 16, raped her, police Capt. Mike Downing said. Two of the boys were arrested about a week later on the campus where they were attending summer school. A third suspect later turned himself in and the fourth is expected to do the same, police said.

The boys are charged with one count each of rape in concert, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles district attorney's office. They are being held at the Eastlake Juvenile Hall, and their cases will be heard in juvenile court.

Authorities said the suspects did not have criminal records, and no alcohol or drugs were involved. Their names were not released because of their ages.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District said school officials have offered support to the victim's family.

``We are of course dismayed if this incident occurred as we are being told it happened,'' Stephanie Brady said. ``We will remain deeply concerned throughout the investigation on behalf of the students involved.''

Brady said police detectives told school police not to discuss the matter, publicly or internally.

``We have had nothing but difficulty getting information from them,'' Brady said. ``There are people feeling like their hands are tied.''

The school has not notified parents and cannot suspend the suspects from school or the team until police tell them more.

Police said a school dean escorted detectives and school police onto the campus when they arrested two of the boys.

``Our detectives went with Los Angeles Unified school police to the dean and informed her of our intentions,'' Downing said. ``She escorted us to a classroom. She facilitated calling both students out of the classroom into the hallway where they were taken into custody by LAPD detectives.''

I think what we're seeing is that it is reported more often than it used to be.

There are a staggering number of women who have been raped and who never reported it because they were ashamed.

Boys will be boys, and if that were my daughter those bastards would be dead. Things like gang rape and such should be a family matter that the father gets to rectify.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...

I was recently involved in a rape investigation where two gang banger hanger ons raped the little sister of an associate. They spit on her during the act, punched her, and told her she was the gangs property now. Since everyone invloved knew eachother, the family knew who did it, and where to find them. I told my partner afterwords. "If that were my daughter you would be investigating a double homicide, not a rape."

And God bless Remington 870 and 00 buckshot.

There would be no rehabilitation. There would only be messy justice.

See , in an IDEAL society, the police wouldn't even have to get involved, because little girls' daddies would bring a world of death and destruction raining down on those punks

Was it ever socially acceptable?

In South Africa, rape is so prevalent it isn't even prosecuted. It would clog the jails if they did that. Very young infants are favorite victims too. Plus add in the insane infection rates of HIV in Africa and you've got a real self-destructive society there.

No offense, but thats not an ideal society, thats vigilanteism. As much as we might say "yeah, thats how I would handle it", in a civilized society we allow the rule of law to decide punishment, not a personal desire for vengence.

You might now call it ideal but I guarantee the number of rapes would dramatically decrease immediately if fathers were allowed to punish the perps themselves.

It's very easy to raise reasonable doubt in lots of rape cases. Too many rapists get off. If a deterence effect is what you are after, vigilantism by the father would cut down on rape.
I worry about the 16 year old girl's Dad who catches her in flagrante, enthusiatically in flagrante with someone who is just old enough to make it illegal. He might be doing something he'd regeret later.
The guy who got life for roasting his daughter's rapist must have had an incompetent lawyer.

Thats not the point. The question is: are we a nation of laws or not? A nation of vigilantes or law abiding citizens? As abhorent as some crimes such as this may be, we MUST allow the criminal justice system to function and NOT take the law into our own hands. You start making allowances for personal vendettas for this offense, and its a slippery slope where all of a sudden people will feel entitled to seek personal justice for the most trivial of offenses.

I don't care how old these boy's are and what GPA they have or what acedemic level they are at or what sports they are involved in or that they don't have anything on their records or how much money/influence/power their daddies have. If they are guilty of gang rape they should all be convicted then promptly shot in a firing squad.

Course I'd like to know what this young lady was wearing prior to her being raped. If it was anything like the High School girls around here she was asking for it.

No, I'm not kidding.

The criminal justice would still be used, after found guilty the perp would handed over to victim's father.

Now everyone is happy.

No, rape is not acceptable in any circles.

But is rape a crime worthy of a death sentence? I'm sure many feminists think so. Whatever happened to the notion of punishment proportional to the crime? Would it not be better to send the rapist to prison for years to "find out how it feels" every day?

If anything, I think that rape has been elevated beyond where it should be in the criminal justice system. Is it a heinous act? Yes. Worse than murder, manslaughter, or a host of other crimes resulting in great bodily harm? Not in my book.

I won't even touch on the issue of false accusations brought on by morning after remorse...

If rape and child molestation where more heavely punished in this country, the rate would probably go down. Killing the bastards would be my pick, but imagine how few rapes would occur if we started cutting off body parts. Tearing out fingernails, and doing experimental surgery on the criminals.

However, we specifically have laws against excessive punishment, and in spite of the horror that any one type of criminal act may be viewed with, amputation and torture is STILL considered excessive punishment.

if feel its one of the worst crimes that could be committed, I dated a girl that was raped two years befor i met her and she still had issues dealing with it. but on another note i can see it is becoming a joke, the crime of rape is all about a person commiting a crime willingly, since personal responsibility isnt cool anymore, it is very easy for a scumbag attorney to say that she had it comming, or he was emotionaly unstable or some other excuse, tis never the crimanals fault, he just held her done and did his thing while the women could be punching and kicking, its never his fault. i swear, since the infamous McDonalds lawsuit, you see more and more of this everywhere

Rape is a touchy subject......

If it's obviously forced, non-consensual sex (i.e. abduction/rape of some random person from wal-mart's parking lot), then the death penalty suits me fine, and I don't care who administers it, or how.

For "date rape" I'm kinda torn.....sure, it's rape, but chances are the woman should bear at least part of the responsibility for it. Considering that, mere castration of the rapist should suffice.

For false accusations.........I think if ANYONE purposely makes a false accusation of violent crime against someone else, they deserve hard time. I thought this long ago, but after a BT,DT one time, I'm even more convinced of it.

<---really, really glad he had 15+ witnesses to say he was 3 states away at the time a supposed crime was committed, long ago in a land far away.
