I consider the left lane to be the fast movers.  The middle lane is for normal and slow traffic.  The right lane is primarily for incoming and exiting traffic.

Is this basically correct or should slow movers always be in the far right lane?

Only if you don't live in MS or LA, if u do pay no attention to the signs on the roadside!! Apparently "yield" & "merge" means turn to the left, don't look and just fn pull out, who needs a blinker too? In our states, the middle is slowest, left and rh sides are nascar style get the fuck out the way lanes...

Since most states have road signs that inform drivers "Keep right except to pass" or "Slower traffic keep right" the logical conclusion is that slower traffic should remain in the right lane as much as practical* so as to not impede the normal flow of traffic.

* Needing to enter the middle lane to allow safe merging of incoming traffic, etc.

Get in the left lane and drive five miles an hour below the posted speed limit, and have your left turn signal flashing continuously.

We need a sticky for this as it comes up once a week. There seems to be a lot of confusion by the members here about this.

The left lane is for passing, speed has shit to do with it.

This changes in built up areas, when exits can occur in either direction, and speeds are generally slower anyway.

I don't care how fast you are going, you shouldn't camp out in the left lane.
Link Posted: 7/27/2013 10:48:31 AM EDT
[#10]
Yes.  The left lane is for passing only.  My opinion is that the center lane is for traveling and the right lane is for merging.  But that's just, like, my opinion man...

I say that because when there are three lanes, it almost always means there are a lot of on- and off-ramps because it's a high traffic area, and traveling in the right lane will impede the flow of traffic.

The only exception would be if you're going well under the speed limit (i.e., close to merging speed) in which case you should stay in the right lane.  And put your blinkers on, you idiot.

Oh yes, and NEVER FUCKING PASS ON THE RIGHT.    ETA: unless you're passing a left-lane camper.  I meant don't pass on the right if you're passing someone in the center lane.
Link Posted: 7/27/2013 10:51:41 AM EDT
[#11]
I drive the speed limit in the far right lane.  If I come upon an RV or some other slow-mover I simply pass them (still going the speed limit) in the center lane.

The only real stress I have is when idiots don't understand that it is their responsibility to merge ahead of me, or behind me - not into me.

The fun part is counting the idiots who think the left lane is their private NASCAR track, and seeing them pulled over by the cops.  I love that shit.

No. Very often the left lane is restricted for certain traffic like 18 wheelers. That puts many of us in the middle lane, which is our left lane, stuck behind slow fuckers that belong in the right lane.

This is 'merica, I have freedoms, you don't tell me how to drive.  If I want to do 10 under in the left lane, it's my God given right by the constitution and the Supreme Court.

Haven't seen it in this thread so figured I'd kick it off for the mouth breathers.

That's pretty much the norm most places now. Don't forget to slam on your brakes every few hundred feet. Right hand exits should begin in the far left lane. Those white lines for dividing the lanes, they are just a suggestion.

Right hand lane, as well as the middle, is for traffic.  Left is passing.  People entering generally have a yield sign and should use their frickin' brains and drive smartly into the traffic stream.  I don't know where the expectation came from that people had to move over for people entering the highway.  It's nice and all but people just EXPECT it now and that's B.S.  Pay attention and YIELD motherfuckers!

OP: Your mentality is a contributing factor as to why traffic is jacked up.

Thinking X lane is for Y speed is wrong and stupid.

If people use the lanes how they are designed then, yes, that is how traffic would naturally flow.  However, getting on to a wide open 3 lane freeway and instantly moving to the far left or middle lane is wrong.  If traffic dictates that you must move to the left to pass somebody in the right lane then do it.  But you should move back over to the right when it's prudent.

Like mentioned before too many clowns hang out in the middle lane and that screws with us truck drivers who legally have to consider that our passing lane.

My two cents on the matter: YIELD and MERGE are NOT the same thing!

In Colorado SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT and KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS signs are prominently displayed on highways.  The law is not enforced as it should be.

Same, in Las Vegas this is how it is:

left lane: at your leisure speed/old people

middle: extremely slow lane

right: passing lane

I hate when there's a slow vehicle in the center lane, and both myself and the car in front of me decide to pass said slow vehicle in the left lane at the same time, only to have the guy in front of me go 3mph faster than the slow vehicle.

I had to check and make sure you weren't from Florida. The NY'ers, Michiganers and Canadians down here are a hazard. Throw in the Third Worlders, Near Dead and FSA members and driving is a real treat.

Thankfully I can avoid the biggest part of them by staying on the turnpike.

No, left lane is for passing. Keep right except to pass. In a perfect world, if everyone paid attention to this, everyone could go just about as fast as the wanted.
