An external extractor on a 1911 platform? This is going to be a deciding factor in my purchase between a Smith and Wesson or Springfield Armory 1911.

Internal extractor is preferable.

Internal. They are alot easier to replace in the field if something goes wrong.

I'd stick with an internal one, for parts availability and because most big 'smiths are more familiar with them if you decide to have it tweaked later.  If you're really paranoid, send it off to Wilson or someone to have a better extractor fitted... and then proceed to never worry about it.

Definitely not. Companies went to the external extractor because they don't have to be tuned (read: cheaper to produce). On the other hand, when it quits working, the external extractor is much more difficult to replace in the field.

Yep.
JMB deemed that the 1911 would have an internal, and it was so.
Don't mess with a good design.

Actually...JMB originally designed the 1911 with an external extractor.  It was the Army who requested him to modify the design for an internal extractor as they belived it would provide for easier field-stripping and maintenance.

In reality, JMB deemed that the 1911 would have an external.

Then he realized he should have made it external and designed the GP1935 (Browning High Power).

Haha, actually, I prefer steel to plastic... the reason I have metal bumpers on my truck and not a VW

The best request the Army has ever made.
