All an external hard drive is, is an interernal hard drive with adapters to plug into your USB port in a box, thats it nothing more.
So yes you can leave it on all the time however as with any mechanical part it will wear out faster if left on 24/7 |

yes it will be fine. the OS will normally power down and park the drive when not in use. Most external drives will do this anyway as it is part of the logic. the only thing running 24x7 will be the power supply and logic. the logic won't care as long as the power supply is stable.

This also the internal happens on the internal drives, somewhere in "SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL" there is away to change the settings when in the internal hard drives are stop rotating except for the electronics. |

It won't cause any problems, but the drive still will crap out more quickly than a drive that is shutdown. Mean Time To Failure.

I use mine to backup my work and my home files so i routinely pull it off, just in case theres a power problem at work. When i'm using it at home it goes into the gun safe when i'm done with it.

Seagate gives a 5 year warranty on ALL their drives. Everyone else 1 to 3. Open up an HP or Compaq server and you'll inevitably see Seagate. Even Compaq/HP drives are really Seagate. And whose drives do you find in EMC sans? Starts with an S and ends with an E . Maxtor WD IBM Hitachi Fujitsu who??? My work here is finished.

a drive is better off left running forever. by that i mean never turn it off for years. many servers run 4 to 5 years or more and aren't turned off. turning a drive off means it cools, then reheats. so you get some shrinkage and expansion that accelerates the drives deteriation. leaving it on all the time keeps the temps constant and extends the drive's life.

I've always heard that the read/write head floats on a cushion of air, just above the platter....a drive that's always on leaves it in a non-volatile state, whereas starting/stopping sets up a condition where it's more likely to nose-dive into the platter, causing a physical crash.
I'm no expert, but that made sense to me, and I've always left my drives on and I have a couple that are close to 10 years old and still going strong. |

Seagate has not been a serious player in large systems since the mid nineties. The nightmares of the barracuda drives almost put them under. Seagate gives a 5 year warranty because they want to sell drives.
That said i have had FAR worse problems with toshiba drives than seagates. Infact in one night i watched 32 toshiba drive fail in a 7 day period attached to one of my mainframes last year. drives were less than 3 months old and most had been replaced previously. I ended up sending them directly to our product engineering department for analysis and every one was direct failure due to multiple components. one of the biggest killers of drives is bad power brownouts are bad news on dasd. Heat is an issue but nearly as bad on drives as it is other components. high speed drives run HOT and are designed to do so. |

I work on Storage for a large company, deal with large SAN, DAS, and FC-AL, etc... storage devices which get to over 16TB, are you trying to tell me that this is not a "large system"? Sorry, I'm misinformed.. Whatever, opinions are like... Drive failure from age, not outside conditions is largely subjective, take that & run with it O wise one of the HDD... ETA: Sorry this is obviously a bit off topic, but I don't take kindly to being called uninformed based upon my current career. |

The servers at work run 24/7 year in, year out, they get shitcanned when they get too small to be worth keeping.
We used to have an old IMB PCXT running as a dumb server, it had ran for years and years 24/7 without problem. Eventualy the head honcho decided it needed all the dust clearing out as it was knee deep. Switched it off and cleared out about 1/2 an inch of dust... the drive wouldn't restart once the grease had cooled. ANdy |

since we tossed seagate and toshiba i rarely swap drives anymore. I have one site with over 1200 drives installed on one of my mainframes. it used to be a never ending job of daily drive swaps. I don't think i have been to that site for a drive in almost a year since we switched.
They also have NUMEROUS EMC boxes at this facility. i'd like to see them burn to the ground. we have nothing but throughput and timeout problems from those things. i spend WAY to much time trouble shooting system problems that belong to EMC. |

nope strictly IBM, at least that is strictly whoever IBM is vending them out to now. they sold off our DASD manufacturing. At least we are getting quality drives on the large system side again. <actually they may be hitachi drives, drive cases look very similar.> |

Same company now. They are all junk. They make them as cheap as they can and support them the best that they can. If they make them cheap enogh they will just replace them over and over and still make a mint. The data however will be lost forever. 3 words to live by "Back it up" |

AFAIK the only drives that are not meant for a constant ON are laptop harddrives. Some externals are, but they are obvious which ones are laptop drives as the external containers are usually only about 1/2" thick.
