So I signed a card sent by my union  (IBEW) for free life insurance.

Sent it off thinking tey would just put it in a file cabinet and be done with it.

So now this lady wants to come over and talk about it with me and my wife.

Is this normal or are they probably going to try and up sell me some more insurance?

I don't want a stranger coming to my house. Never cared for that at all.

You are about to learn the meaning of "upsell".

I'm sure the free is a minimal package. She's coming over to get you to UPGRAYEDD to a more substantial policy.

I have a 30 year term policy for 1 mil. They came to my house and took blood, weighed me, etc. Took about an hour.

ETA

Yep, upsell is inbound.

There's probably a cavity search/inspection with this policy.

That's what I was afraid of. I don't even want it. Probably just call to cancel the whole thing.

I had set it up for today and forgot about it and she texted me this morning saying she'd be by around 1 o'clock.

Told her it's not happening today.

They will want a blood urine and DNA sample....
They will test you for all the usual..
And than after test results the real cost of your policie will be revealed...

we have a mandatory aflac meeting every year around insurance renewal time.
every year i opt out, and the past couple years i've refused the meetings, they're just lunch meetings anyways. every year i actually had to talk to the woman doing it, she'd drop her jaw wide open and act completely surprised, like she'd never ever had anyone ever say no to their coverage.
she tries to get me to sign something saying i'm opting out, but i've usually been able to duck and dive that as well.
last year when she tried to guilt me into attending the meeting (after being told i wasn't attending  by the receptionist) she got offended when i said, 'i'm just fucking sick of people trying to sell me shit i don't want.'
you'd think she'd remember me - been the same chick each year...sometimes she brings a helper.

be prepared to answer questions in front of your wife.

like:

do you love your wife?
do you love your family?
do you want her to always be happy?
do you want to see your family succeed?

that's wonderful.

now look your wife in eye and show her how much.

sign here............

Insurance salesmen and Timeshare salesmen.  No difference and I'll bet one could survive in the other's industry.  Snakes.  Start saying "NO!" right now so it's ingrained.

The thing to really watch out for is whole or universal life as an "investment ". Don't buy onto that without doing your own research.  It is not a good investment compared to other investments.

Do a little research on how much term life you think you need based on your own circumstances so that you're an informed consumer before the meeting.

I'll probably just cancel the whole thing.
I have insurance through work and never had to have a meeting with anyone. I even upped it to around 500k and it was just sign here.
Never dealt with life insurance outside of company provided stuff.

Sounds like she is going to tell you that your have an insurance shortfall and permanent insurance is what you need.

Op, you should probably sit down with a real Financial Planner and get your shit squared away.

If all of your insurance is tied to your job, what happens if you lose your job?

I changed jobs a lot, so I carried my own life insurance too.

It may be worth it if you're young and the insurance is relatively inexpensive.

Not abnormal.  I was getting a life insurance quote once from American Family insurance.  They sent someone to our house to do a biometrics test (Weight, BMI, blood pressure, etc.)

They then no quoted the wife because she has a history of depression and quoted me an astronomical rate because I have a pilot's license.  I assume life insurance is a biz AmFam isn't serious about being involved in.

Op, you are about to learn just how unprotected you are and that you're a bad person for doing that to your family. The kind gentleman will guide you through the process of redeeming yourself and it will involve whole life insurance.

An option is to tell the insurance person that you and the wife are nudists and will be meeting with her in the nude. That may solve the problem of her coming over to the house and if not, it might be a party.

If you don't know much about insurance.  The meeting can be informative.

But, having said that.....it's more likely that she'll try to up sell you.  Actually, you might just be under insured depending on your family situation and your concerns.

Leaving behind kids and a wife?
What happens if the wife dies first?
Worry about the kids college?
Worry about retirement?
How are you suppose to get from Point A to Point B?

Don't buy yet. Tell her you want time to consider some options.

But, after the insurance lady leaves maybe you might want to schedule a meeting with a financial planner?  Listen to what he/she has to say.

Take time to let it digest.  Before you make a move.

Aloha, Mark

I work with Life Insurance and related products.

Unlike your car policy and home owners policy, it's very common for the Agent to come to your house.

Underwriting on a Life Insurance policy can include all kinds of information including a full blood and urine work up (though not always).

You will be upsold on other products, so be prepared, but those other products aren't always unnecessary.  If your company provides a small fraction of the coverage that you should probably have, then buying more isn't a bad thing.

100% chance they are going to upsell you. Free is to get them in the door. Life insurance sales only happen face to face. Let me guess, they have already asked you to make sure you and your spouse are both there?

Does that 500k quit you if you quit the company? That will be the first question they ask you.

That depends on how much you put into the whole life, how quickly you put it in and what their interest rates are. Sometimes it can be a good thing if you have alot to dump in very quickly. Like you said, do your own research.

A salesman or saleslady that says "investment" and "life insurance" in the same sentence/conversation are likely being non-compliant with a whole lot of rules and company guidelines since basic life insurance policies that have some accumulation factor (typically whole or universal) are not "investments" nor are they "savings accounts".

That's not to say that WL/UL policies don't have valuable benefits and there are a whole lot of people who outlive that 20 or 30 year term they bought off of a 800# and wake up at age 60 or 65 and try to find some more life insurance when they find out their group coverage drops or cancels entirely and they didn't "invest the rest" after buying term and their spouse will have a lot of debt when they die.

By the way OP "you" don't have any insurance from work unless the policy is in your name and just paid via payroll deduction, if it is group coverage it is subject to the whims of your employer and employment status and may not be convertible to individual coverage so maybe talk with someone who knows

Yes you are correct, saying that the potential investment gains are "guaranteed" is a no no. This will come shortly before they say "Company ABC" has never not paid dividends out and so on...

Not if you've been in the military.
The key is to be emphatic enough that they get it, without being so firm that they burst into tears. That would not be a good time to put on your war face!
