There is a really nice SLR-106FR 5.56 x 45 at the fun show going for $800. I don't want to add more calibers even though 5.45 and 7.62 x 39 are cheaper. My concern is one day that cheap Russian/Eastern Bloc surplus will dry up. Is it an abomination to own a AK in 5.56 x 45?

No and hence my exact reason to compel Arsenal for nearly seven years to produce the stamped 5.56 AKS74-M1A1 renamed 106FR. The rifle is as accurate as an M4 carbine yet won't choke on the cheap stuff.

I don't get it.  AKs should be cheap to shoot.  Mine is in 5.45.

IMHO YES!!!

5.56x45 ammo is too expensive to shoot in an AK.

Find an AK-74 in 5.45.  The ammo is about $130 / 1K right now (but corrosive).  You will pay more for the gun and mags than a standard AK-47, but if you shoot enough, the costs will be off-set by the savings on ammo.

Buy it cheap and stack it deep!  There are other companies now producing the ammo, so it's not like you'll be totally SOL if the surplus supply is eventually cut off.

5.56 is not a bad idea either, although mag availability may be an issue (haven't looked for them lately).

I wouldn't have one that's not 7.62.  But that's just me.

I want an AK in 5.45 something bad. I can't find them for a good price though.

Before 5.56mm got expensive,  I had a SAR-3  AK in 5.56mm NATO.

I sold it because it was the only AK I ever had that wasn't reliable.

If its made by Arsenal then you might want to check out the Bulgarian AK section here at arfcom before you plunk that money down.

I have a SAR3 and love it.  I already have 2 ARs so it isn't like I'm adding a caliber to the collection.

Why?

AKs should be cheap to shoot and making one in 5.56x45 negates that. I would only buy one in 7.62x39 or 5.45x39.

I have a feeling that the industry is going to catch on, prices are going to go up and they are going to say that supply is drying up.

Just look at 223 and 7.62, and apparently all the billions of ak's that are out there that have been mass produced since the beginning of time have all of the sudden dried up.

Maybe I have my super thick tin foil hat on here  but I think all this shortage business is a bunch of fu*king bullshit and I don't buy into it, but I'm forced to pay a premium on my firearms and ammo because its the last one anybody in the world will ever see.

well thats my rant for the day

If you want one then get one.....lifes too short to do without what you want, if you can afford it.

I bought a PAR-3...a pump action variation of the SAR-3 in .223 made for the Kali market at a local sporting good store.  It will take the ProMag 5.45 mags just fine
and reliability is not an issue.  I shoot the cheap brown bear stuff through it.  Works just fine and is pleasantly accurate for a gun that was in the $200 range.  Just got a
new scope mount cover for it and am gonna get a cheapo mil reticle scope to go on it.

Once I get it dialed in I will probably give it to my oldest when she turns 18 in about a year.  Be a good first gun for a teenager.

And when the surplus 5.45 dries up or is banned from import?

I'm planning on getting an SLR-106. It's the best of both worlds.

Yes, yes it is.  There's a metric fuckton of 556 guns out there, and an AK shouldn't be one.

Abomination?

No.

...but AK's in general don't really like 5.56. Even very well made AK's in 5.56 tend to be really iffy in the reliability department.

I have an SLR 106 FR and like it just fine.  Plus, it digests the steel cased 5.56 well, which I won't run through my AR or PLR 16.

Any reason why?  I have only seen one AR that wouldn't shoot Wolf .223.  Of course, its a 9mm AR...
