I got one of those cease and desist letters from Charter (my cable company) because I downloaded a copy of BF2.

I can prove that I purchased the game and I was only doing it because my CD was damaged.

What's the deal? (I have a dog)

Get a new ISP?

Find a better cable company that knows how to mind its own business.

I believe backup copies fall under fair use, have you read the EULA?  They can vary.

AFAIK, there's no law against downloading anything at all. Everyone who's ever been sued has been sued for uploading. So if you dl the .isos on bittorrent and you upload at all, you're infringing on copyright.
Link Posted: 10/17/2008 8:13:08 PM EDT
I don't think Charter can afford to lose you as a customer so I wouldn't worry about it

Link Posted: 10/17/2008 8:15:58 PM EDT
next time dont download from shitty sources where you can get caught and reported

Google "foxyproxy" if you're using Firefox.  If you're not using Firefox, quit life.

1) No.

2) You need a new ISP.
Link Posted: 10/17/2008 8:19:31 PM EDT
Send them a letter telling them to cease and desist harassment.

Hide your dog.
Link Posted: 10/17/2008 8:22:37 PM EDT
Consider the letter a badge of honor. The worst they are going to do is cancel your service. Now if it comes from the RIAA/MPAA or the feds, start worrying.

Charter sucks donkey balls.

I used to get them from Cox in VA when I downloaded TV shows.  I think they said they would give 3 warnings before they cut off service.

Also, in college back in the day I once got in trouble for downloading Xgigs in one days so they throttled my bandwidth. :(  I got around it though.

Could you tell me a little more about this please?

I always hear about cable companies sending people these letters, I've never heard of anyone on ATT or DSL in general getting these?

That wasn't you, that was someone on your unsecured wireless network.
Link Posted: 10/17/2008 8:57:06 PM EDT

You bet.  FoxyProxy is a service that allows you to surf the internet through a proxy.

Essentially instead of your PC sending a request to a server directly, it sends it through a random proxy server and THEN to your target server.

For example:  Your PC > DemocraticUnderground now becomes Your PC > Bobs Plumbing Emporium (Amsterdam Branch) > Democratic Underground.

This essentially makes it seem like Bob's Plumbing is doing the surfing versus yourself, providing you another layer of security.

Hope that helps.

This.

Tell them to fuck off.  And if some copyright monkey from the RIAA/MPAA/(random 4 letter acronym of some shit for brain fucktard lawyer firm) sends you a letter, tell them to eat shit and die.  You OWN a legal copy.  As long as you only have it installed on one computer, it does not MATTER how you obtained the installable code.

Link Posted: 10/17/2008 9:47:57 PM EDT
Torrent for now on, use Protocol Encryption and make sure you have a Safepeer-like list plugged into it to thwart RIAA and your ISP.

That's what someone told me once yeah.

I know how to hide myself but I didn't think they would be competent enough to look.

I guess I'll proxy now.

Proxies and Firefox and browsers of any type have absolutely NOTHING to do with downloading TORRENTS.

Search for Peer Guardian 2, it's free.
That's what you use with torrent downloads.

uTorrent (with Forced Encryption enabled in preferences) should be your client.

Shouldn't get any more letters.

FAIL!  wutzu is correct - no one ever got in trouble for downloading.  You got nailed because you were using lamer P2P crapware that makes everything you're downloading available for upload.  I have a friend who got his Charter cable account canceled because he was using a Torrent client to d/l Solidworks.  Well guess what?  Solidworks, Inc. has people on staff who scan P2P/Torrent looking for their products and then complain to the IP address provider.

Stop using retarded P2P clients like the rest of the lusers and learn NNTP.

+1
PG2 does a very good job. Make sure the version of Utorrent is 1.6.1 as there has been many people saying newer versions report statistics.
Also try using USENET, lot's faster and discreet.

They didnt do shit, it was just there way of saying "knock it off" we got a complaint from the owners of the property. So i now use "USENET" which is 100% ANON.
