IIRC, If it was a 'real' (assembled) rifle before the 94 ban, I believe is will be legal to add the collapsable stock to it. I'm sure there are persons who have more information than I do on that subject than I do.

Yes it would be legal to do so. As long as you bought the rifle complete with pre-ban features(such as flash supressor and bayonet lug) then you could change it to a 16" pre-ban upper with a collapsable stock. Since it is pre ban you could make it an registered SBR and put a shorter barrel on it if you wanted.

I am not sure if you can own them in your state but a registered SBR(short barreled rifle) is a rifle with a barrel less then 16". It is considered an NFA(National Firearms Act)controlled weapon. It would mean you would have to register the lower with the BATF for $200 if you meat all the legal requirements of your area and then you could put a shorter barrel on it. You could just get a true M4 barrel(14.5") and then have a flash suppresor installed permanently to keep it 16".

Thanks for the reply. I understand about short barrel rifles and the law, but I've never tried to register and own one. The term "SBR" didn't click. I live in the conservative State of Indiana. I'm afraid it's just a matter of time before the political winds will change here also, but for now, our legislature is more worried about driving with cell phones, charging taxes, and budgets. I hope it stays that way. |
