Linky

Legal phrases like "probable cause" and "unlawful detention" come to mind.

Not to mention asking what happens if the driver/passengers refuse the "invitation". Does the deputy initiate a drug search?

Get over yourself, really.

Sounds like Mayberry is boring as hell, and the officer has NOTHING to do.

The town pays for the cop cars, they can use them for what they want (within the limits of the law).

Impeding the flow of traffic and a few public safety issues come to mind....

But the town doesn't have the authority to stop US citizens just to bug them to spend money. If the person doesn't stop I'm sure it escalates, or if they have no PC to stop, then find a violation later, will that violation stick. Talk about fishing for tickets.

And what if, under the pretext of pulling someone over to nicely ask them to spend 20 hours in their lovely town, they find something illegal?

So the PC is out of state tags? That town is going to pay out more than they take in.

Me either........................

What happens when they fun stop a car with a dead body in the back seat or a dozen kilo's of coke. The stop just went right out the window.

"I was behind a truck that I'd followed for about 15 miles, I wasn't speeding, I didn't know what I could've possibly done," said arrested tourist Ron Cunningham.

After a little convincing...

"Sounds good to me, sounds good, ok!"

"Either you come visit our town, or I bust you for tailgating and reckless driving"

The local PD is having a "Safety Check" on Hickman Rd tonight, around 7000 block if I remember right. Saw it on the TV this morning. They will stop every 4th car and ask for DL, registration, etc, and give a FREE "Safety Check".

I imagine the safety part has to do with seat belts, tires, lights, ETA: OWI, but I was tempted to go and ask them to check my brake pads!

Weird, we had something like that going on in our city. Cops would pull people over for driving good and give them a coupon for a free cup of coffee. Weird and maybe wasteful, but hey, its not really a big deal.
