I eat one $3 box of popcorn per week. I feel bad but will admit to taking from the global corn supply. I am man enough to take your judgement.

They have arrived!

"From my cold dead fingers I tell ya!"

I eat a big box every week rather than chips and the like. Less fat.

Get the unpopped pop corn and pop them yourself. You could save a lot of money. A 2lb bag is something like $2-$3. I only use about 1/2 cup of corn, when I am making pop corn for me and my 2 children.

Yep, the high cost of corn is causing real economic pain in Mississippi/Louisiana area when they farm catfish. They are also being hurt by cheap imports from Vietnam and the PRC.

I know this is gonna sound dumb, like 20 year old blonde girl dumb, but how do you pop popcorn other than in a microwave

I know they used to sell popcorn in those foil things you put on the stove, but how do you pop the corn you can buy loose in a jar

Don't worry man, I don't eat that much popcorn in a year. Just think of me loaning my popcorn credits to you. Don't get too crazy or I'll start charging you! (I'll take M193 ammo in payment if you decide to go too over board)

Acutally the corn used for fuel and the corn used for popcorn are not the same. You cannot grow corn and sell it to any industry. It has to be planted specific for that industry. THere are differences in sugar content, shell thickness etc..

I use the Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper with 1 Real Theater Popcorn Kit- Silvertone Pan. I got it free from a neighbor who didn't want it anymore.

But in the old day prior to the Whirley-Pop, I just used an aluminum 12" frying, pour in half cup of pop corn seeds, heat on the stop until it start poping, pickup the pan and shake until no more popping.

If only everyone could eat half that amount of popcorn, the carbon footprint of the popcorn industry would drop by 50%!!!!!

I highly recommend the Whirley-Pop machine, you can pop about 2/3 cup of unpopped pop corn max, just be sure that you have enough bowl(s) that will hold all of those popped kernels.

I put the real deal butter on my pop corn. I hate that artificial butter crap, that stuff smells nasty, but more or less taste like butter, but Wikipedia - diacetyl has been implicated in causing respiratory ailments when heated and inhaled over a long period.

ETA: those hot air pop corn poppers aren't too good for me, they poop out after only a few uses, and they can't pop much either, only a handful of kernels.

I think you are one bag of microwave popcorn away from an epic emergency-room "honest, doctor, I fell on it" thread.

For me, Orville Redenbacher kernels popped with safflower oil in a deep saucepan on the stove. Sea salt for the finish.

Yum.

I have an electric corn popping machine that uses simple hot air. You just put some corn in it, turn it on and wait. It takes a little while to get hot enough to pop the corn and it's noisey as all hell.

The hard part about using the machine is that it's not deep enough to fit the whole cob into it.

Another method I've heard of it to use a saucepan with a lid. Put some cooking oil in the saucepan, enough to cover the entire bottom of the pan with a thin layer of oil. Put in the loose corn, put the lid on, heat it up on the stove top until it starts popping. Shake gently until the popping stops.

i may have to try the saucepan method.
