Q. What do you call fires popping up at 80 locations within Detroit?

A. A good start.

(Hope everyone stays safe out there.)

Wrong.  The fire started when Bush was in office and just now got out of control.

Apparently that's still not enough to warrant front page on any of the main news sites.

Imagine if 80 homes/buildings were on fire in Los Angeles.

It's linked on the front page of CNN.com.

Is there anything worth saving in that entire city?  I heard they were bulldozing commercial/residential real estate in order to plant crops b/c they could make more selling vegetables than they can in collecting rent.

The fires will probably cause millions of dollars in improvements.

Urban Improvement.

I hope nobody is hurt though. 60 fires in one night, even in Beirut Detroit, is a lot. There's coordination involved.

If the city burns then more of the urban waste will make it to the burbs, no thanks.

Hell, I'd never have guessed there would still be that many standing structures left in Detroit! Eighty fires burning at once, what the hell is going on? Angry blacks? Muslims protesting?

The news is making it sound like the perfect storm.. not enough fire fighters or trucks for the amount of spreading fire, low water pressure, wind.....

This works out because if the grass around Detroit got over 4 feet tall, the city would have had to do something about it. I'm guessing illegals from South America started using slash and burn farming techniques.

This morning on the way to work, I noticed a plume of smoke west of the Lodge between 7 & 8 mile. didn't think too much of it.

Then, on the way home, while making the turn from Davison east to I-75 south, I saw three fires in a row, separated by about 1/4 mile from each other, but it looked to be on the same street. maybe on Conant or Mound.

If they were closer together, I would think that there was one fire, and it spread. but the way they were spaced out, I figure it had to be Arson.

Talked with my dad about this earlier.  He thinks this guy did this before in highland park.  The fires are lit with planning were they will be spread by wind.  Whoever is doing it knows how to light them fast then move to another site before anyone can react.  It might end up being a firefighter doing it.  They tend to be prime suspects when this type of outbreak is going on.

Detroit fire officials said nearly 20 fires broke out in the city late Tuesday afternoon.

On the east side, a vacant commercial building on Hendrie and Dubois streets caught fire just before 5 p.m.

Also on the east side, there were house fires reported on Quinn Street
near 7 Mile and Van Dyke; McClellan Street and Barry; McClellan Street
at Murray Street; Carpenter and Fenelon streets; Luce Avenue and Bloom
Street; and Moenart Street.

On the west side, fires were reported on Curtis Street and Livernois Avenue, and on Plainview Avenue and Evergreen Road.

No injuries have been reported.

Fire officials have not said what sparked the fires but said their strength were fueled by strong winds.

DTE Energy said late Tuesday evening that it had 42,000 customers without power.

Heavy winds fanned the fires which jumped from some of the abandoned homes to others. Most houses burned were abandoned, some were occupied though no serious injuries.  Fire officials think downed power lines sparked the fires initially though some were undoubtedly set. The fires are under control at this point. Oh, and you guys should understand that there is not a street in the city of Detroit that does not have abandoned houses on it.

60-80 house fires in Detroit is nothing. During Devils Night, there used to be 400-600 fires in a single night.  I worked a couple of those nights in a  non detroit PD LE agency in Detroit and it was pretty spooky.

Columbia SC burned in large part due to excess of loose and baled cotton that filled the city.  Pretty sure there are no cottton-pickers in Detroit, so you can't blame Sherman's guys this time.
