(The sky is falling....)

Iran’s F-14 jet fighters significantly modified

TEHRAN (MNA) -- Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naderi, the director of the Iran’s Aviation Industries Organization (AIO), announced here Tuesday that fundamental changes have been made to Iran’s F-14 jet fighters. Speaking to reporters at AIO headquarters, Naderi said, “By combining Eastern and Western military technology, we have gained capabilities that are even surprising to our enemies.”

“Relying on its indigenous specialists, Iran today has no problems in modernizing its military equipment,” the general added.

Naderi stated that the AIO has shared knowledge with friendly countries that possess aviation industry technology.

The U.S. sanctions on Iran have not influenced the country’s military industries, he pointed out, adding that Iran has never halted its efforts to manufacture military aircraft since the sanctions were imposed.

According to Naderi, over 4,000 highly skilled specialists are currently working in Iran’s aviation industry.

Paying more attention to aviation industries could stem the brain drain, the general noted, adding that efforts should be made to attract talented university students to this industry.

The AIO is affiliated to the Ministry of Defense.

The Russian supposedly helped them refit the F14s. The good thing is that they dont have many and they dont have AWACs type of capability. Sitting ducks once our 15s are in the air.

So they can fly em? Where do they buy the sparrow and sidewinder missles? The engines? Im sure they can make some parts.....Eh, its not like they are state-of-the-art fighters...
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 8:02:52 PM EST
Yea, they are A models, and weren't given Phoenix missles, IIRC.

What's funny is, in the next few years, they will be the only country operating them.
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 8:04:11 PM EST
maybe they will crash them when they get the typical A model compressor stall
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 8:10:21 PM EST
They have Russian missles. They are more then capable. Supposedly Russian engines as well.
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 8:17:18 PM EST
I cant think that Iran has very many F-14's left in their inventory, I remember a lot of thembeing taken out of service back in the early 1980's

Good for the Russians. They are supplying their future enemy with up to date military equipment and nuclear fuel. I wonder if they realize that the Iranians are the ones that helped supply the chechans with weapons, money, and training that took the school hostage.

Money is money is what the Russians are thinking.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a picture of these and find out they were converted to coal-power...
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 9:10:58 PM EST
sounds like a bunch of B.S. to me. I don't care how great you make or refit an aircraft, if you got some dumb ass in the cockpit your still going to get your ass shot off.

So what did Russia get out of all of this?…

They were given at least one F-14 by Iran which gave them easy access to a modern radar that they used as a starting point to build the sets in the Sukhoi SU-27 & 35. IIRC they have supplied the Iranians with this modern radar and AMRAAMski missiles to retrofit into the F-14 along with new engines and modern avionics and a 'glass' cockpit.

Iran is believed to have run out of AIM-54 Phoenix missiles now but they did send some to Russian who's Vympel Design Bureau used to develop the R-33/AA-9 Amos missile that equips the MIG 31.

BTW, the radar in the MIG 29 is believed to be a pirated copy of the F-18's APG-65 radar, they stole the design via Canada IIRC.

I bet they still all die when the Israelis come for them.

Actually they were given the phoenix missiles.... the missiles are just way past their shelf life now.

I'd have to see it to form an opinion.

My gut reaction is that they are overestimating their accomplishments.
Link Posted: 10/1/2004 1:57:10 AM EST
France, I'm sure, would be more than happy to sell Iran anything they wanted.
Link Posted: 10/1/2004 2:07:47 AM EST
American pilots are among the best, if not the best in the world.

Iranian pilots would stand no chance I do not care what they were flying.

Yep it does!

Maybe the writer indicated the 1 still flyable F-4 and it got transposed to F-14.........LOL

Why do I get the feeling "significantly modified" involved duct tape and Elmer's glue?
Link Posted: 10/1/2004 3:32:09 AM EST
I bet those Tomcats look pretty silly with propellers on the front.

France and Russia are certainly capable of rebuilding their aircraft, but any of our guys in an A-4 could shoot them down.

russia and iran are more of a threat than ever before, dont let em fool ya

we, or israel would still smokem fast

ground war would be the tough part

Anyone else find it funny that Iran is still flying 1970s era shit that they stole from the Shaw?

Iran is one of the most oil rich nations in the world and they wouldn’t last ten seconds against ANY other nation in the region.

If you gave Iran another five centuries of technological development, they still would not be able to build anything equivalent to the shit they robbed. Fortunately the same affliction that makes them a threat to free people also appears to limit the severity of the threat.

They have also modified HAWK SAMs to allow them to befired from the air.

There is only one or two pictures in existance which show this, and they've never been observed training for this or firing one.

Jeez...that a big missile to strap on a airplane!

So who did refuel the F16's when they hit Iraq's reactor complex in the 80's? Who ran cover for the refulers?

Curious if it could happen this time.

The Phoenix missile only works over water, so they would have very little use of them.

Huh?

Actually, the Hawk doesn't look that big on a F-14.

The strike package consisted of F-15s and F-16s. I think the F-15s had some buddy stores with them. I can't remember. It's all online somewhere.

Interesting article!

Now, who are Iran's enemies?

The Sunni Arabs?
The European powers including Russia who occupied them?
America?
UN Inspectors?
Samin Rushdie?
Themselves?

Yep, I bet they're the envy of the world, obsolete American aircraft upgraded with inferior technology and craftsmanship.

Their own people. I've met a few Iranians that beg us to invade.

Not so bad once they designed a fairing to cover the big-azzed rubber band.

I am very certain that the Russians gained much knowledge from these F-14s in the 1980's, that helped the development of their current jets and air to air missles.

... Like what? Getting them out of their fucking hangers and onto the tarmac?

Wow, im just shaking in my boots. The F14 A is a pig. The D model is much better, but cant hold a candle to the most modern F15C or F22. The mullas should just buy some damn leftover M17s from the Chinese :D

My understanding is that we supplied them the F-14As without the AWG-9 radar system.

The F-14/Phoenix system was sold to Iran for several reasons. The F-14, because of it's, (at the time limited) role, (air to air/fleet defense), wasn't selling to our allies, and I'm sure Grumman wanted someone to sell these to besides the U.S. The main reason it was sold to Iran, was because of continuous overflights by Soviet fighter jets of Iran. The Phoenix system does work over land.

OK we sold them 80 F-14As, right? How many are left flying?

Put that against Israel's 362 F-16s.

Their 'signifantly modified' Tomcats will meet the same fate as Iraqi Mig-29s - a flight path that intercepts planet earth at near perpendicular angle. Decent plane + a pilot with little 'Time on Stick' = "Splashed Bandit"
