OK, it's NewsMax, but a plausible account of the plan anyway:

Iran's Revolutionary Guards are making preparations for a massive assault on U.S. naval forces and international shipping in the Persian Gulf, according to a former Iranian intelligence officer who defected to the West in 2001.

The plans, which include the use of bottom-tethered mines potentially capable of destroying U.S. aircraft carriers, were designed to counter a U.S. land invasion and to close the Strait of Hormuz, the defector said in a phone interview from his home in Europe.

They would also be triggered if the United States or Israel launched a pre-emptive strike on Iran to knock out nuclear and missile facilities.

"The plan is to stop trade," the source said.
...
Iran plans to begin offensive operations by launching successive waves of explosives-packed boats against U.S. warships in the Gulf, piloted by "Ashura" or suicide bombers.

The first wave can draw on more than 1,000 small fast-attack boats operated by the Revolutionary Guards navy, equipped with rocket launchers, heavy machine-guns and possibly Sagger anti-tank missiles.

Would not be any more than some casual gunnery practice for the US forces.

Oh really, then why haven't we done it?

That would be a very large error.

If we want in there, we'll get in there but there will not be a ground assault.

The mines and the ballistic missiles aimed at regional targets, and perhaps also chemical weapons, would be the major concerns. I think the speedboats would get strafed by helos and aircraft in short order.

I can't really see a major US landing on Iran's coast, unless it's to clean out missile batteries. There's a perfectly good oil field to sieze right next to Iraq.

They'd probably do more damage than you think...

Hopefully we can just pull an Isreal (aka 1981 Iraq bombing) on their asses, then go home.

Because they haven't tried to take us yet.

What do we have that could depress enough to take on a speed boat besides a deck mounted .50 cal?

Keep in mind, we're not talking about going after a carrier group, they just need to shut down the Straights of Hormuz, which can be done easily by sinking a couple of oil tankers with anyone of the  hundreds of anti-ship missiles they've purchased from china.
Would we retaliate, sure, will we go to war with Iran over this no - America doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to open another front over there.
Bottom line, Iran doesn't have to do anything at this point but keep enriching uranium and it will continue to enrich uranium until it has all the nuclear weapons it wants. The genie is out of the bottle

Praying Mantis, 1988.

But notice that the Iranians did get a mine hit on an FFG first.

If you think the Israelis will let them get nukes you are crazy.

The Straits are about 50 miles wide.  They would have to do more than sink a couple of tankers to close it.  They also need to be careful whose tankers they sink--they could end up with a whole lot of other countries after them if they sink Russian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indian, or European flagged tankers.
