Back in April I was laid off from my job as the operations manager for two marriott hotels. I've been working as a courier since.

I have an interview on monday for a general manager position at a local super 8.

My dilemma is should I shave or not? I am 24 years old but when I am clean shaven I appear much younger, maybe 17 or 18. I currently have about 3/8ths to 1/2 of an inch of facial hair growth that makes me look much older. The only problem is that my facial hair doesn't completely grow in all the way. There is a bare spot on my chin and my mustache is separated from the rest. So it doesn't look like a full grown "professional" beard.

Should I leave the hair and look older but risk looking slightly less professional, or shave it and look like an 18 year old applying for a general manager position?  I am qualified for the job and would succeed at it.

I would say shave but that is entirely up to you I guess.

keep the hair but get a nice suit to make up for it.

I vote shave.  I do it the night before so I'm not all red.  The other option is to do like a 3-4 day growth where it isn't recognizable that you have a crappy beard and you don't appear too lazy/unkempt.  The key is to have a proper fitting suit imo.  It can make up for little appearance stuff.

Unless you are hiding some hideous scar or deformity, shave.

Unless it's an already full grown, well-maintained "professional" beard, shave it.  No ifs, ands, or buts.

Shave. While you might think you look older, you might not. Some people see a person with a thin beard and think, "young person trying to look older"

I am in your same situation concerning facial hair. I get carded far less when buying adult items if I shave.

This.

Beards need to be full and well groomed or non-existent for a good professional first impression.

It don't matter....

I did some work at a Super 8 once, in the managers office he had a sign that read,

we put the ho in motel....

Patchy beard would hurt your chances, IMHO. Lose it.

If you get the job are you going to grow it back? If so, don't shave. If you're going to shave if you get the job, then shave.

Shave your face.  If you truly look that young when clean shaven, then you only THINK you look older with the scruff.

Shave you heathen.

I've been bearded practically my whole life, but I voted for shaving it. Why?

Patchy beards look like ass.

I would shave it. If its spotty, you'll just look silly. Your exp should speak for it more then what your face looks like.

You have the same kind of "beard" I get.  My GF calls it vagina face.  Shave it.
