Internet Knife Purchases Led To Zantop Suspects
Teens Allegedly Purchased Commando-Style Knives Before Murders
BOSTON, 10:29 a.m. EST February 19, 2001 -- The purchase of two,
commando-style knives over the Internet was what led investigators
to two teenage suspects in the brutal killings of popular Dartmouth
professors Half and Susanne Zantop.
According to WCVB-TV in Boston, investigators reportedly focused on
Robert Tulloch, 17, and James Parker, 16, because the teens
allegedly bought two unique, special forces commando-style knives
over the Internet, according to Vermont County Sheriff Dennis
McClure. The knives cost about $300.
Investigators checked with the manufacturers, who gave them a list
of customers who had recently purchased the knives and allegedly
Tulloch and Parker's names were on the list.
The teens were then brought in for questioning Thursday night and
were fingerprinted. Fingerprints taken from the murder scene
allegedly matched perfectly with the prints the teens willingly gave
to police when they were brought in for questioning.
According to a statement released late Sunday by New Hampshire
Attorney General Philip McLaughlin, authorities now believe Tulloch
and Parker are heading across the country by soliciting rides from
tractor trailer drivers at truck stops.
Authorities said the two Chelsea, Vt. teens may have been seen at a
truck stop in Columbia, N.J. Saturday morning.
The following morning, Parker's mother's car was spotted by a state
trooper on a routine patrol at the Sturbridge Isle truck stop along
Interstate 84, about two miles from the Connecticut state line.
Sturbridge Isle employee Sharon Palmer told The Dartmouth, the
college's student newspaper, that she saw the boys at about 4 p.m.
Friday. She said Parker appeared to be upset.
Parker and Tulloch have been charged as adults with two counts of
first-degree murder in the deaths of the Zantops, whose bodies were
found stabbed to death in their home near the Dartmouth campus in
Hanover, N.H., on Jan. 27.
They are also being charged with federal unlawful flight.
In his statement, McLaughlin released detailed descriptions of both
teens.
Tulloch is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 155 pounds,
with blue eyes and dyed blond hair. He may be wearing BDU pants with
large pockets, black high top sneakers and a light long brown
jacket, and may be using the name ``Sam.''
Parker, who is 6-feet-tall and weighs 150 pounds, has brown eyes and
dark brown spiked hair. He is reported to be wearing a dark brown
coat, brown hiking boots and a dark ski cap, and may be using the
first name "Taylor" or "Tyler."
"I'm confident we will find them soon," FBI special agent Bruce
Ellavsky said Sunday.

The two teens allegedly stabbed the popular professors "multiple
times in the head and chest," Senior Assistant Attorney General
Kelly Ayotte said at a news conference Saturday in Hanover, N.H.
She said that they were last seen in or near Chelsea, VT., on
Thursday. Authorities refused to discuss how they identified the
suspects, a motive or any connection between the boys and the
victims.
A friend of Tulloch's, Casey Purcell, said Saturday that Tulloch and
Parker left town in the days after the killings, then returned two
or three days later.
A few days later they disappeared again, said the Chelsea High
School senior.
Purcell said Tulloch told him the pair were trying to go rock
climbing in Colorado, but had to return because Tulloch had a cut on
his leg that became infected.
Tulloch said he cut his leg on a maple tree sap bucket while walking
in the woods, Purcell said.
Half Zantop, 62, taught earth sciences at the 6,500-student school.
Susanne Zantop, 55, was chairwoman of the German Studies Department.
Both were naturalized citizens who were natives of Germany and
traveled abroad frequently.
New Jersey State Police Sgt. Joseph Eden said they have no knowledge
of the two teenagers being spotted in Columbia, N.J.

Interestingly enough, I'm from Norwich, Vermont right across the river from Dartmouth College (About 1/2 mile).

As some of you may know, Vermont is the liberal capital of the universe and Norwich is populated by the epitome of pampered, isolated, liberals.  Morally superior to thee and me in every way.  Some of my liberal friends up there are talking openly about bringing back the death penalty, in light of  the murder of two of their own.

Go figure.  Now maybe they'll "come out" for the second amendment.

In fact, I am a "sort of" alumnus of the University of Vermont.  I attended from 1982 until 1984 and was kicked out for bad grades.  I went back in 1992 for one year, and then transferred down to Louisiana Tech. (My wife's family is from Louisiana)

I was a very active in campus politics in 1992.  But on the conservative side.  You might say that I was the College Republican.  Do you Vermont guys remember that whole "Diversity University" farce which included a takeover of the university's adminstrative offices in the Waterman Building?

Well, I was the guy who first "occupied" the shanty and then tore it down on TV.  Well, tried to tear it down.  I didn't get too far into it before the campus police asked me to stop. (They asked me, not told me.)

And I used to go to all the "diversity forums" and interject the conservative viewpoint. Additionally, when one of the Professors wrote an Op-ed in the "Cynic" saying that white people were inherently racist, I filed a complaint with the schools equal opportunity office.

Yes, I have "been" to Vermont.  Please don't try to tell me that it is not a liberal state.  Burlington is, after all, the San Francisco of New England.

"Assualt/combat knives" are a controlled item in Canada.  I THINK, those folks defined it as a having a blade of 8" inches or more.

teen-age murder suspects into stopping at an Indiana truck stop to hitch a
ride, authorities said Monday.
Robert Tulloch, 17, and James Parker, 16, were arrested about 4 a.m.
Monday at a truck stop outside New Castle, Indiana. They are each charged
as adults with two counts of first-degree murder in New Hampshire in the
stabbing deaths of Dartmouth College professors Half and Susanne Zantop.

Early Monday morning, Henry County Sheriff's Sgt. Bill Ward said that he
was monitoring citizens band radio traffic when a truck driver westbound
on Interstate 70 asked for someone to pick up two hitchhikers he could no
longer carry.
A nationwide FBI alert and reports on CNN indicated the suspects may have
been hitching a ride to California, Ward said. So he got on the radio and
encouraged the trucker to drop his riders off at a truck stop near New
Castle.
"I said, 'Hey, why don't you drop them off at the fuel desk and someone
will pick them up in a few minutes.' And he did," Ward said.
"I actually didn't expect it to be them, but I thought it would be worth
checking out," he added.
'They appeared to be very surprised'
Both suspects are from Chelsea, Vermont, which is about 30 miles northwest
of Hanover, New Hampshire, where Dartmouth College is located.
Authorities charged them Saturday with the Dartmouth professors' slayings.
Police warned that the teens may have been hitchhiking after a
Massachusetts state trooper found the car they had been driving abandoned
at a truck stop Sunday morning.
Ward said Henry County deputies found the two teen-agers at the truck stop
matched the descriptions of the suspects and arrested them.
"They appeared to be very surprised," Ward said. "They didn't expect us to
move in around them so quickly."
Friends and neighbors say the boys disappeared from Chelsea, Vermont,
shortly after the killings. New Hampshire authorities will seek their
extradition in the Zantop killings.
Victims taught 25 years at Dartmouth
A friend coming to dinner found the Zantops dead in their home in Etna,
New Hampshire, outside of Hanover, on January 27. Half Zantop was a field
and economic geologist who had taught at Dartmouth for 25 years. Susanne
Zantop, who headed the German Studies program and participated in the
Women's Studies and Comparative Literature programs, had also taught there
for 25 years.
The professors were German-born, naturalized U.S. citizens, popular among
students, and they often opened their home to students and community
members.
Casey Purcell, a friend of Tulloch's, said Saturday that Tulloch and
another boy left town in the days after the murders. They were gone for
two or three days, he said, and then they returned to Chelsea. A few days
later they disappeared again, said Purcell, who is a senior at Chelsea
High School.

  I would agree that Vermont is a liberal state, as I read they legalized same-sex marriages.  

  But doesn't Vermont also allow residents concealed carry without any kind of permit?  Perhaps forum members from the northeast can confirm that and, if so, explain how it happened in the state.    

SIGmund: Its because of the state's Constitution, in 1903 (IIRC) there was a court case about it, and Vermont's Supreme Court ruled that the state Constitution's version of the 2nd Amendment included CCW as a right.  CCW is a human right in Vermont, not a law, thus the liberals cant touch it.
