Now that Illinois has concealed carry, business have started putting up signs to tell me that my money is no good there. Today, I took the kids out to see the Lego movie, and give my wife a break. Inside the theater, they had a sign that said something like:

"Due to the shooting in Colorado and the almost shooting in Missouri, we reserve the right to search all bags and pockets."

Two questions:
1) What do they do if they find something?
2) I know it is private (leased) property, but what gives them the right to physically put their hands on me?

For the record, no one touched me, and I didn't witness anyone being searched. However, when my wife went for a girls night out, her bag was searched. She is a habitual snack smuggler.

Read up on the concealed carry law for your state. In some states signs carry the weight of law, in others the most they can do is ask you to leave.

If you don't consent, you are now trespassing (after they tell you to leave and they will)

You don't leave, fuzz gets called and bad things happen.

Probably looking to increase concession revenue. I think they can do it cause if you don't comply you will be barred from entry.

I never cared much for pocket pistols anyway.

Seriously, I wouldn't put up with an invasion of my privacy simply to give a move theater company my money to see a film as their customer and I would leave.

They can't "reserve the right" to do something they never had the right to do in the first place.  They can certainly ask you to leave though.  But forcibly search me?  Not a chance.

Only the state police approved " no guns" sign is legal per the fccl law on carring a hangun. Not that most ccw pistols are carried in bags or pockets.

CCW rights step one: get "shall issue passed in your state.  - CHECK.

CCW rights step two: when asshole businesses start doing shit like that, take your money elsewhere, but also contact the management and let them know WHY you are doing this.  - IN PROGRESS.

(Be polite in your communication with these businesses and don't come off sounding like a raving lunatic please.  When these businesses start finding out how many of us there really are, and the impact
on them that a boycott can have, sometimes they WILL change their tune.  Many times these people are not necessarily "assholes" so much as they are "misinformed," and you can help to educate them
and counteract the effects of anti-gun media propaganda which has heretofore clouded their opinions on the subject).

the only other place I know of where they have issues with firearms of any kind, is the jewelry store that starts with a "J"

Their house, their rules. If it is privately controlled property and they want to search you in order to grant you access that is up to them. You have the right to leave at any time, they have the right to deny you access for not consenting to a search. This is all a smoke screen to ensure you are not bringing in your own snacks and drinks.

To be clear, the sign was inside the theater near the bathrooms. NOT on the outside of the building.

I once entered a Wendy's restaurant for lunch, and saw that they had the "No CCW" sign displayed - behind the counter where you could not possibly see it upon entry.

I had a good laugh about that one.

I'm glad you guys in IL finally got "shall issue."  We had all the same shit you are talking about (businesses doing stupid things, etc) when it was first passed in my state.

OP, like others in this thread have noted, this is usual in a newly "shall issue" state. Once the Nervous Nellie's don't
have shootouts in the aisle's like they expected, the signs will come down.

Hell, last year after we in NC got the right to carry in restaurants that served liquor (at the owner's discretion) I did not
see even ONE sign prohibiting CCW go up. Still haven't, and I look for them.

Give it time, the stupidity will pass.

This. The reason many businesses put up the signs in the first place is because they have been bombarded by anti-gun groups. When CCW passed in Ohio, the anti groups were giving out signs to businesses.

They shoehorned in the legislation giving the signs weight of law, then pressured businesses to put them up, effectively voiding the CCW law.

Same here, and I occasionally open carry, and called the police to get clarification as to whether guns could be open carried where alcohol was served.
They basically told me they didn't know what the laws were and to take my gun outside if management asked me to.

My local theater has a big sign as you walk in, "Absolutely no weapons allowed!" and some other crap.  I chuckle a bit every time I carry passed it.  The husband of the manager of the theater is one of my employees.  I keep meaning to ask him about that sign.

Texas has a very explicit law as to what a no-CHL sign has to look like.  I often wonder if some of the non-compliant signs are just an attempt by the business of CYA.

You have no right to enter upon their private property.  They are giving you conditional access.  Their stated condition is you must concede to their searches.  You can choose NOT to enter.  There is no coercion.  It's all completely voluntary.  Both parties are free to choose.

Right to private property, is as sacrosanct as the right to bear arms.  In fact, you might say they go hand in hand.
