Saw this on the news a few days ago, checked it out tonight.  Pretty cool.  Although I could get all the same info and satellite images online from various sites, this one site is simple to use and packages that data quickly and in a reasonably useful format.

If I remember correctly, the news said the site was created by the same guy that did Expedia.com.

Looks like a pretty good resource for home shoppers.  Check it out --> Zillow.com

I have no financial interest in promoting this site, but I think it could be valuable to remember in the future.

So what's your house worth?

What's your neighbor's house worth?

What's that house that you sold 10 years ago worth now?

What's that house you lost in the divorce settlement worth now?

I looked at it for homes in Indianapolis - all it did was pull the assesed value from the county. Those people get values by looking at your house, from the comfort of their car!

I think the data is from tax info and building permit data.  In your case the results might cause prospective buyers that use this site to pass you over which would be a bad thing.  The site is pretty beta right now.  My residence info is pretty accurate, except for the square footage (an extra 500 square feet) of the finished loft in my detached garage that we built in 2001 has not been included in my total square footage.

Seems like it is drawn  diectly from county tax records as they have a listing of current property tax.

However much of the information was inacurate.

They have 2,310 Sq ft
Actual 5,600 Sq ft

Baths off by 1

They have Stories: 1
Actual Stories: 2

Yearly taxes   $7,212
Actual $12,034

Value of the home is off by about 1/3.

98% of homes in the 967** ZIP code have a value lower than this home.

Zillow.com was started by Richard Barton and his friend Lloyd Frank. Barton is the guy that started expedia.com.  He has realtors running scared right now, because his ultimate goal is to sell homes over the Internet.

Barton is a smart guy, and I have a feeling he will accomplish his goals.

I can see a time when you call Ditech.com, they do a quick Zillow-scan, send you an email to reply back to, and transfer home-equity $$$ into your bank account within an hour or so.  Home equity loans will become just too easy, and everyone will sink faster and deeper into debt.

On the other hand, if the data is innaccurate, you may be screwed, and have to wait for a human being to verify values.

The creators of this site were smart enough to get free coverage on CNN, and now apparently on ARFCOM.

They have the wrong house assigned to my address. They have my house on the wrong side of the street, wrong BR, wrong SQFT, and they have a neighbor's house that has fewer BR, 300sqft smaller than my house, no basement, smaller lot, but valued $50,000 more than mine. I don't think so!

While I agree that realtors need to be put in their place, this system he has going is not worth a shit.

They said my home was worth more than $200,000 5 months ago, in the fall of 05'.  And worth $136,000 now.  That means it lost over a third of it's value in less than 6 months!?
BULLSHIT.
I paid $124,000 for it just about 4 years ago.

Pretty cool. 3 out of 4 were right on: my old house, THIS house, and my Dad's house. My Grandmother's old house was way off, however. The size of the lot was right, and that's about it.

Neat site! I've got it bookmarked.

For my area that site sucks, but most sites do. (Not even MapQuest shows my address).  I wouldn't have been able to find the area if it wasn't for the nearby quarry. When I try to zoom in it either goes to a screen that says no satellite image at that zoom level, or switches to a regular map view.

All you can tell is that there's a quarry and lots of trees.

Terraserver did better, and I can't do Google Earth because my processor is only 533mhz and I'm on dial-up.
