This footage from a Russian air show crash is pretty incredible. I dont know what went wrong in the plane but the pilot has definitely lost control of the jet. It looks like he does his best to maneuver away from the crowds but in the end he cant prevent the crash. I hope everyone was ok.

Looks like he gave his life so others would not die. A brave man.

+1 I don't see any signs of him ejecting.

Right at the end of the clip you can see a very brief glimpse of a parachute.

Final figures released indicate that 83 people died and 199 were injured as a result of a disaster at the Sknilov aerodrome near Lvov, in which an Ukrainian Air Force Su-27 taking part in an air show crashed into the crowd. The tragedy occurred on Saturday at 12:45 local time, when the plane, which was performing an advanced manoeuvre, suddenly began to lose height and plunged into spectators. Both pilots managed to eject.

The catastrophe in Sknilov is the worst in post-Soviet Ukraine's short history. The press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced that 18 bodies remain unidentified due the seriousness of the injuries they received. Criminal proceedings have been launched against the pilots of the Su-27. Ukrainian Defence Minister Vladimir Shkidchenko immediately tendered his resignation to President Leonid Kuchma after the disaster. A day of mourning has been declared in Ukraine today. The presidents of Russia, France, Georgia and Moldavia, as well as the German Chancellor and the Council of Europe have offered their condolences.

The crew ejected safely (Soviet fighters have a superb auto-eject system). The Pilot was jailed for 14 years and the Co-pilot got 8 years…

They should put Russian crashes on the airshow schedules.

No you've got it backwards. In Russia, they schedule plane crashes and everyone shows up hoping that an airshow might break out.

'Cause they're allowed to do crazy crap that would get a pilot here grounded.

Nah.... the Su-31 (at about the 7 minute mark in the video) is nicer (or at least the pilot is anyway :) )

There are some spectacular hi-res stills of that crash floating around on the net (I wish I had links to them). One hell of a crash to catch on film.

ETA: That second video is some seriously cool shit. Russians make some pretty mean airplanes.

Probably didn't compensate for his altitude. That caused the Thunderbird crash a few years ago.

Wish my Dad had broadband,he'd tell us what went wrong.(He used to be on the Danish AF aerobatic team flying F-86D Sabrejets. If you fuck-up bad here, and its your fault, you should end up there too. Think of that B-52 PIC,how he was allowed to even fly.escapes me.

Looks like he just freaked out and tried to pull his way out. He didnt have enough altitude or airspeed to pull it off. A/C problem my ass, thats just plain pilot error. On a side note, those eastern bloc guys dont get a lot of flying time. On deployment to poland, I got to hang out with the Pol Mig-29 and Su22 pilots and they only had a total of 500 to 800 hrs flying time total with their top pilot having only 2000. Shit Im just a 24yr old civilan pilot and have more time than the majority of their pilots. They only fly once every 2 weeks... These guys werent fresh from pilot training either, 30 and 40 somethings. Most of our pilots have more than they do just in the F-16.

Nice to see that Bereviev are still making seaplanes. Seems that they're the only people still in the conventional waterbomber market. (Drop foam. Land on nearest water, refill, drop water, repeat). But did you catch the bombload from the Platypus? That's a mud-mover that carries a world of hurt.

Must try and track down the video again of the Su-27 that did a belly landing because the pilot forgot to lower his gear. They craned it up, lowered the wheels, set it down, and it flew home.

Thats odd, because the Poles just bought

I guess they would be better off in their Mig-29 (they bought some of them from Germany for 1 € each) and spend the money on flying time rather than having F-16 they rarely fly.

I believe the F-16s were to replace the now-deleted MiG-21s and Su-22s, but the -29s were to be retained in service for a while yet. Nice to see a different colour scheme though. Greece, Venezuela, Israel and evidently Poland I think are the only ones not to have the usual two-tone.

Seeing that F-16 photo reminds me of the F-16N's they flew at Top Gun for a while, at least until the Top Gun instructers managed to fly the wings off them and they had to be withdrawn from service. Those were painted up in European and Soviet schemes.

True. The 21's have all ready been decomissioned with the Su-22s in the next few years. The 29s are suposed to last for the next 10 years.

Ive got close to 400 pics from when I was over there. They are on my other computer, so Ill post them when I can get home.

This one my buddy took from one of our D models. (Unit Photographer)

Here is another view.

Can you imagine being one of those people on the ground and seeing this coming at you?

This had to be the majority of the people killed that day.
