Ahh, that songs brings back memories.  When I was in junior high (middle school), our entire earth sciences class had to listen to this song.  After the god-awful thing finally ended, the hippie teacher asked if that song made us think about the earth and how we affect it.

Me:  "That song sounded like a bunch of hippie crap."

"What?!?!?"

Me:  "What a load of garbage.  The planet will still be here.  What a bunch of sissies.  The principal's office?  Yeah, I know where it is."  

Another trip to the office was the day they showed us a propoganda film about Kent State.  The hippies were portrayed as loving and normal, while the "establishment" was just a brown shirt away from being portrayed as nazis.  After the film, the teachers asked us what we learned.  

I spoke up again: "If you throw bricks and start fires, you'll get shot.  You'll deserve it too.  Principal's office?  Got it."  

Man, I still have that on a 45 rpm!  Hell, I still have a turntable that'll play it!

There may easily still be a United States...

...but it will be just one little country down on the backwater of the Earths surface.

Hopefully by then a population of 300 or so Billion people are living comfortably in thousands of orbiting colonies.  Some in the Earth/Moon system Lagrange points, but others orbiting Mars, and the Lagrange points of the Earth/Sun, Mars/Sun, and Venus/Sun systems.  Some few colonies (for short term habitation only since they would be too far from the Sun to support themselves) would be scattered through the astroid belt where engineers happily ground up astroids and comets for the raw materials to support all those colonies.
