So there I was in my local wal mart checking out some rifles when I overheard some gentlemen talking about the recent mall shooting.

On the drive home I was struck with a thought, and honestly I'm not sure of a few things.

So say for instance I work at walmart, at the gun counter, or maybe I'm just shopping and so happen too be in the sporting goods section, when suddenly I hear shots begin too ring out, quickly looking up I can see an active shooter in my line of sight.

My initial thought would be too go for my carry gun. But in this instance I dont have a carry gun. Be it either because I left it in the truck, on the nightstand at home, or just dont have my carry permit yet.

Say Im an employee, I have keys too the gun display, keys too the ammo case, I have the ability too eliminate this threat before anymore lives are lost.

Or a customer, with the baseball bats hanging clearly in view beside the guns and ammo I can break glass and become armed.

For the sake of this hypothetical question lets say there are multiple shooters throughout the store, and I want too be armed as I get out. My questions to you are this,

And I know more than likely you would be shot by police and this is a stupid idea,

but in the event you are pinned down, maybe having too arm yourself too take cover in a stock room or something,

What is the legality of arming yourself with a display gun?

What legal repercussion would you face if you actually were too use the gun too eliminate the threat?
For the sake of a little extra argument and thought lets twist it up a bit, What if you where underage? Say 17 years old, not legally able too purchase a firearm from a wal mart in TN?
And No, I dont work at wal mart, nor am I under the legal age to purchase firearms.

ETA: Made post easier too read.

I tried reading that but it gave me a headache.   If I got the jist of it you're going to steal a gun from Walmart to race to a mall to address an active shooter.

That's real retarded sir.

"to" vs. "too"

Does anyone give a fuck about the English language anymore!?

eta: "where" vs. "were"

How long is it going to take you, under stress, to break the glass and get a gun (hopefully with a magazine nearby if an AR), then break the glass to get to the ammo, and then load the gun to then fend off a shooter?

That is the question.

Your right to defend yourself does not hinge on where/how you go about obtaining the means to defend yourself.

I'll take the risk and legal threat any day over being carried by six

You have a right to self defense.

If you arm yourself with a store gun with which you shoot the active shooter, there should be no criminal liability.  However, you should be prepared to be engaged by either uniformed or off duty police.  Disarm yourself and allow yourself to be taken into custody until the popo sort things out.

Not quite as easy as it looks.

Well if you were the walmart employee you would be fired. They already did that to some worker's.

Wal-Mart tends to have a lot of shoppers packing heat anyway.

It seems almost every time I go the one here I see somebody in a three-wolves shirt open carrying.

Remember folks-before you make any heroic decisions like smashing a Walmart gun case to stop an active shooter- we don't have a justice system-we have a legal system and the demon spawn run it.

Just ask George.

If you don't live to talk about having to make your choice what would be the point? Pay for the rifle that saved your life later.

Just remember CCW does not equal police officer. Another thought is when a reaction by the police occurs it will be hard to differentiate you from a shooter. Make careful decisions.

Correct answer. Give this man an internet.

Obviously we should ban malls. If you remove the target-rich environment, there is less likelihood of a mass shooting.

If this all took place while I was working at Wal*Mart - I would open the case, grab a gun and a bullet and off myself.

If this all took place while I was visiting a Wal*Mart. Wait, never mind, wouldn't happen.

Fuck Wal*Mart.

If I die in a shootout in Wal Mart it should be while getting my family to safety and not for going all "here hold my beer".

If my family is not in the store, which they are never with me anyway, I'm calling 911 and hiding out until it's over.  Unless they are coming in my direction, I let the cops handle it and stay out of it.

You'd be a hero, no charges.  no news would report about it, and Wal-Mart would fire you.

Sometimes, the wiser decision is to run to safety, rather than try to fight a battle where the odds are stacked against you. Picking up a rifle means you become the target of the active shooter, the cops, and any would-be-heroes such as yourself. Wal-Marts are big buildings, all with multiple entry / exit points.

Be careful not to grab a .22 as your only option would be to use shot shells.

So after you break the glass on the gun display, how long should you wait for the WalMart employee to get the key for the trigger lock?

If you are at the gun counter, you are at the back of the store.

How about just un-ass the store and not try to be a hero.

You have NO idea who the good guys and the bad guys are in the store.  A guy has a gun and is searching/shooting in the store.  He a tango or a plain clothes cop?  You have no way of knowing.

GTFO and let the cops handle it.

All the ones in my local wal-mart anyway.

Those trigger locks are easy to defeat.  Especially on an AR.
