Spent a little over a week in Banff and a small amount of time in Jasper.
Impossible to cover both in such a short time frame. So I have an excuse to go back. More on my site. http://www.kapplemultimedia.com/banff/bin/banff.htm Here are some of my favorites so far. Just over half way through editing the images. |

Great pictures. Can you run through the process of editing? Any hints/tips? I am working through Lightroom right now. I use several different programs. But mainly photoshop. Initially, I try to shoot the shots in a way that will not require much PP. I use GND filters a lot. I bracket the hell out of most shots and blend exposures. I do not like HDR, it looks fake IMO. But can look good if done right. Blending exposures happen mostly with the waterfall shots. Most of the time with long exposures, the water highlights get blown out completely. I usual take exposures from one stop over and with half stop increments, I take exposures all the way down to 2 stops unter exposed. I stack the exposures I will end up using as layers in photoshop. And I simply erase parts of the top layer so the next layer blends in well, then merg and go to the next layer. I keep doing this for different parts of the water until I am happy with it. For all my water shots, be wether they are waterfalls or ocean scenes, I use the Single Ray Vari-ND LB Warming Polarizer filter. Here is a link to it. http://www.singh-ray.com/varinduo.html This give me complete control of my shutter speed depending on the amount of light at the time. I usually never shoot waterfalls when the sun is out. Most always it is overcast or raining. This helps even out the light and reduce hot spots. I only use Lightroom for it's noise reduction filter for the infrared images I shoot. Hands down, thats the best program on the market to reduce noise. I do not really have to worry about noise that much with the 5DmkII. If you want to know a lot more, feel free to IM me and we can chat on the phone or email. |

National parks like these have tons of scenic vistas but you seem to have a knack at framing them - do you have any advice on how to find good scenery to photograph?
Do you first look at topography maps and try to visualize what it might look like there? Do you just take tips from locals (park staff) on what to see? Books? I'm just curious because you captured a great diversity and did it well. Cheers! EDIT: I just clicked on your link after I posted this and was greeted by the following statement: I spent a lot of time collecting info and contacting other photographers in the area asking advice of specific locations. All the info I gathered will be placed on this page so book mark it for future reference. I guess I should read a little bit. Great information, thanks! |

I guess I should read a little bit. Great information, thanks! No problem...I do spend a lot of time researching the areas I want to go well before hand. Gives you a good base to start with. |
