Me and the Family were thinking about spending a couple weeks in SD , ND , MT and maybe ID camping / maybe renting cabins . My wife then asked me something I didnt really think about , she asked did I have anything to take down a big bear ......... well I have a few guns that "will" take down a large bear but nothing that packs easy ... FAL and a couple bolt actions in 308 plus a few mausers in 8mm . I said well its no problem I can just bring a 12 ga with slugs ..... then it hit me I do not nor have ever owned a 12ga shot gun . I have only ever owned 2 shot guns both given to me , a 20 gauge single barrel that was my dads as a kid that he gave me when I turned 10 and a 20 ga mossberg pump that my grandpa gave me for my birthday when I turned 12 because I scared the hell out of him with that single barrel . When I got old enough to buy guns I only bought rifles and pistols . So should I buy one ? A FFL friend of mine says he has a mossberg 500 persuader with pistol grip and stock he would sell me for 300 green backs which I figure would be bad and if the 12 ga pump is like my 20 gauge it should be a solid gun .

Every man needs at least one flavor of 870. It says so on the back of your man card.
There's lots of love for the 500 out there, but is personally stay away from the PG one for a bear gun. |
I'd just pack the FAL, if you can (in the legal sense). I've got a couple 12 gauges, 1 HD model and another Charles Daley Field Hunter for dove and quail. They rarely ever come out of the safe, though...

I say pick yourself up A nice Marlin lever Action and some heavy Bullets.

Unless you plan on hunting bird, there is no need for a shotgun. Probably the most boring gun to shoot otherwise.
Save your money for an M16 lower/ |

I think every gun owner should own some sort of shotgun, whether he/she 'needs' one or not. Similar to a nice revolver, for me.

I use a suppressed sbr for hd and don't hunt birds. Have no interest in a shotgun.

I only own one. Cheap Mossberg 500. Works well and is fun to shoot.
But since you can find a nice used pump for ~$200...the real question is why don't you own at least one? |

Get some lead and some molds and you can roll your own 45-70 boolits. |

For bear get a 45/70 guide gun. It penetrates better on big game. Get a shotgun for small to medium size game. 9 pellet oo buck has 3" of surface area. Can't beat that for human targets if you need instant incapacitation.

Mossy with a pistol grip is a fail. Look where the safety is. That being said, a marinecoated 500 I have has never failed to go bang for me.
I don't think 5 or 6 12 ga slugs would fail to stop a charge short of a really pissed off Rhino. |
I've got a Mossberg 835 UltiMag that is ported and it is a beauty to shoot, if you were looking for something other than the 18.5" barrel variety.
ETA: Shooting clays is good practice for leading moving targets, gauging target speed and the speed of your shot. It's not as easy to practice or teach that with an AR or FAL. |
Get an 870. I have three, but I'm not really a shotgun guy. I don't even remember the last time I shot them, but I do love having them.
The solid Ka-Chunk sound of racking the slide on a 12 ga. will make a bear go hibernate early.
The tinkly little sproink sound of chambering a round on your ar means "Dinner Time". |
Shotguns are a nice side habit.
Crude, cumbersome, classless, and nasty things, that are devoid of a soul. Everyone should have one, and be intimate with it, as a rough tool to be used when needed, and for great fun. Not having one is a serious deficiency. Address the matter ASAP. They can be addicting though, so choose with expansion in mind, and post pics, when you succumb to the charms of whatever trips your fancy. |

I have .410 single shot, hiwatha. Had for thirty years. Works for me. Not every ones cup of tea though, I realize.

My only shotty is a 20 ga that came down to me by my wife's grandfather. I've never even fired it.

You need a shotgun of some type. Whether it is chambered in 12 gauge or not is up to you.

I own seven ARs and three times that many assorted shotguns, none of which are really "packable" in bear country.
That duty goes to my 4" Model 29 S&W in .44 Magnum. dp |

Semi shotguns are a lot more fun than pumps. Get a Mossberg 930 for around $500 and shoot it a lot. Great versatile caliber for not much money.
I actually shot my shotgun for the first time in months today. I wonder why I keep forgetting it exists. Winchester 1300 Plenty of fun.
I'd say stick with the 20 gauge Mossy pump, alot of people use 20 gauges very well and effectively.
I hate shotguns with a passion, but I own one just because any gun guy must have at least 1 in his collections.
I don't think I'd bother buying a 12 gauge on the off chance of running across a man eating bear, particularly if I owned an FAL. I own a half dozen shotguns but could live without them unless I go bird hunting again somedahy
Have had a 12 ga. Browning BPS since I was 14. Still have it and love it.
I have a Winchester 1300 Black Shadow that would be good for clay or birds. I have a Remington 870 18" that I got before I had ARs. Don't see a need for anymore shotguns and the Remington could go.

Lol But this guy hasn't ever even owned one shotgun. You should get one op. |

I guess I'll have to be the one dissenter in the group, so far.
TAKE THE DEAL. Use the buttstock; forget about the pistol-grip version of it. Appease your Wife. Get the shotgun being offered. You won't be sorry. |
