I just delivered a load of firewood to a family who didnt have shit.

She was all nervous about not having enough money to pay me .

The house was friggin empty and cold.

I told the poor lady "No charge."

Man I feel lucky.

I hope it comes back to you ten fold. To bad there's not more people out there with the same mindset.

My dad used to do the same kind of things. He'd work three gardens all summer, and give most of it away to single moms we knew trying to raise their kids. However he never gave a dime to charity, believing it started close to home.

During my travels abroad I would see whole families with small children living in abject poverty in dirt huts or cardboard shacks, living hand to mouth. Those experiences instilled a sense of gratitude deep within. I am very thankful for the things the good Lord has granted me.

We Americans take so many things for granted that others will never have and it is a stark contrast to see others living in poverty here in America.

Makes you feel pretty damn good doesn't it. I expect nothing less from the good folks here, and am glad to hear of it. I am always amazed what insane deeds we "goofy gun nuts" pull. Though it seems these days no good deed goes unpunished, the eternal optimist in me believes no good deed goes unrewarded. The true spirit of Christmas is embodied in what you did today.

Hmm...what I would like to do, is get my 21 yr old (going on 13, and "is this ALL I'm going to get"?) stepdaughter to read and understand it.
The same one who thinks she's TOO cool to work at McDonalds to help finance her own (and failing) education.This is a problem I inherited and am going to have a bitch of a time changing.

Geezhound, you did a fine thing. It reminds me of something that happened to me back in 1994. I was driving down a rural highway about 45 miles from home when my car overheated. I checked the radiator and saw that it was terribly low on coolant. I walked up this long dirt road to an old farmhouse. A woman answered my knock and invited me inside. Her young children were standing around an old kitchen table with a very small cake with lit candles. One exclaimed that it was her birthday. There were no presents. I explained to the woman that I needed water and she had her young son retrieve two buckets and instructed him to take me to the creek near the highway-end of their dirt driveway and help me fill and carry the buckets to my vehicle. The little guy wasn't quite large enough to carry a 35-pound bucket of water so I carried both as he accompanied me to my car. After I filled up the radiator, I offered him a ride up the driveway, which he refused. I handed him a $20 and told him to give it to his mother. I drove off only to overheat again a few miles down the road. Seems I had a blown heater hose. A teenager stopped and offered me a ride. He drove me to a small town where I bought a heater hose and even returned me to my vehicle. I tried to offer him payment, but he refused. He just said that maybe he or someone else may need a ride someday and to just return the favor. Whenever I feel down about finances, I think about that poor woman and her kids, and realize just how good I really have it.
