Well his, and Bushes, actions since then certainly suggest he is lying there to Fineswine. Besides, do you really beleve that a reauthorisation bill has ANY chance of making it through the House? It will never reach Bush's desk.

Ashcroft HAD to get confirmed. Note he said it "was my understanding". That's not much of a leg to stand on. Ashcroft can always say "sorry, I guess I misunderstood the boss" I'm not sure if he will sign it or not. My guess is that it will never hit his desk. I'm hoping he can keep it tied up in Congress. GW is doing a lot of manuevering behind the scenes. If he signs it, I think it will be watered down.

Let's all e-mail the president and tell him not to sign it. -Chuck

I don't doubt it!! The media fueled public outcry would be political suicide. How does this work exactly? Does Congress have to actually pass a bill & have the Presidnet sign it? If that's the case it's conceivable that if the renewel takes place during a second term for Bush he could have the cojones to veto it. Although the GOP would be flamed in the next election by the media!

no offence, but GW has no chance of getting reelected, AW or no AW. GW is such an "extremist conservative" (read: not socialist) that he has alienated just about every 'moderate' (read: inconsistant) voter. alphabeta121

What media fueled public outcry? Where was the outcry when Ashcroft changed the Justice Departments policy on the Second Ammendment. Where was the public outcry when the Administration told the UN to shove it with the Small Arms Ban? Meanwhile the Million Morons have had to close up shop. There last couple ralleys they were outnumberd by the pro-gun demonstrators (now THATS a tiny crowd). If the AW ban is allowed to die, there will be no media induced outcry either. People are catching on that gun-control isnt the answer. The time has come to start pressuring for the things we want, like CCW reciprocity and the repeal of executive orders regarding imports of weapons. Confront the anti-gun movement, they are a paper tiger.

This is what I just e-mailed the president, I would sugest all members and gun oowners do tha same. "Dear Mr. President, Let me first congratulate you on your job well done in your administration so far. My main request is that you do not resign any version of the Assualt Weapons Ban when it "sunsets" in 2004. The ban has sky-rocketed the price of various necessary self-defense and hunting firearms accessories. High Capacity Clips and Magazines have been used by people in self defense across the country and reduce reloading time for those having to defend themselves against evil. Flash Suppressors are used by those who carry AR-15's while night coyotee/wolf hunting; After they fire, they are not blinded by their own flash to see if they need to shoot again. Now about the Pistol grip that "protrudes conpiciously beneath the stock". If anyone were shot by an old english field style grip (which has basically no grip at all) I do not thin kthe shot person would care as to what grip was on the gun, the "protruding grip" affects in no way the way the weapon functions, and is an added bit of comfort for those who choose to put one on a rifle. Now to the folding/collapsible stock; it allows those who wish to keep a weapon in their car (with a legal CCW license) to be able to maneuver the rifle/shotgun between the seats without wasting time fumbling a longer weapon around. For all of these Valid Reasons The gun owners who voted you into office, would also vote you out if you resigned the bill. If I am not mistaken, the sunset would take place right before the election of 2004. I do agree that fully automatic and suppressed weapons still need to be banned as where there is no use for them except defense against others who have them. Let me conclude that I pray for you and your family on a regular basis that God will show His wisdom in allowing you to lead the greatest nation on the Earth He created. Philippians 1:3, Your Fellow Citizen, Charles K. Bost" Doing this will help! I promise. -Chuck

Hey, the man made his own choices in front of the mike. But his actions since are not consistant with that statement. Most people would call saying one thing and doing another lying. Of course he has to do what GW tells him, unless he wants to be fired. He is part of the exectuive, part of the cabinet, and therefore he serves at the pleasure of the President.

Sorry, but I hate hearing that "People should be able to own any gun they want, except a machine gun" crap. That is the same argument used toward us... If you feel this way, why can't you just be happy with a Remington 700? What do you NEED an AR15 (read: assault rifle) for? I applaud your effort sir, really.

ALL OR NONE! machine guns and suppressed weapons have every bit of legitimacy that any other weapon does. D. www.azexarms.com

George Bush will most definately sign the assault weapons ban if it reaches his desk. He stated this during his campaign and has kept every promise so far. What it comes down to is: you, me, and every other gun owner making sure that it does not pass the House and Senate. To do this we must sweep the 2002 kicking out many anti-gunners. This will make gun control taboo and no one will want to touch the issue because they don't want to lose their seat. Start today. Find out how your legislator feels about the AW ban and let them know how you feel. If they are for it find someone to run against them and support them. If the assault weapons ban is resigned it is because of a failure on our part to keep our elected officials from voting for it.

He's not lying. He's merely (not) answering the question by being as evasive as possible. I suppose you prefer he didn't get nominated. Besides it's all a mute point if everyone does their job and the Republicans retain control of the House in 2002. Then there won't be an AW bill to sign. MG

You know the more I read the Miller decision, the more I have to agree with Havoc and azexarms. Milita weapons are protected by the Constitution, that includes MG's. However, having said that, FEDERAL law does NOT BAN machine guns, it only makes you go through hoops to get one. Those states that ban NFA weapons would get in trouble, and the anti-machine gun provisions of the 86 FOPA are also unconstitutional. But GCA 68 would survive, except that issuing tax stamps would have to become a "shall issue" proceeding. But given what the general prices of high quality firearms have climbed to over the years, the 200 dollar tax can no longer be considered a unreasonable price. You would have to seek relef from the Congress on that one, not from the courts.

I'll believe it when I see it. You know they will give him a lot of shit when the time comes. A full frontal media assault. Especially if that Captain Pike and Sarah McCough are still around. Gun control may appear to be on the back burner, but remember how sneaky those damm demoCRATS are.

Quite true... If a renewal of the AW bill gets through the next Congress and to Bush's desk, it will be because there are more gun control advocates than opponents in the House. Bush will sign it then, not because he promised before he was elected, but because it will obvioulsy be a popular decision. But if we make sure things at least stay the status quo in the House it will never get to his desk. Unlike what Gore would do in his place, Bush will NOT campaign in support of more gun control. He doesnt beleve in it, just look at the state he used to govern. His statemetns about supporting the status quoe made during the 2000 campaign I am sure he wishes he could take back NOW- after us gun owners put him over the top in the tight election, and after the states he was courting with that stand ignored him and went to Gore anyway. I am sure he would take those statments back- if he hadnt talked himself into a corner by criticizing Clinton and Gore for similar reversals during the campaign. Face it, gun control was not expected by anyone in either party to be a important issue in this last election. It was a total suprise. Both sides were shocked by the result and had no plans to deal with it.

JOHN ASHCROFT: It is my understanding that the President-elect of the United States (My hopefully future boss) has indicated his clear support for extending the assault weapon ban, and I (as his employee)would be pleased to move forward with that position, and to support that as a policy of this President,(and if he changes his policy) and as a policy of the Justice Department.(then I will change the policy of the Justice Department)
He is not lying. He is saying that he will support the policy and position of his President. And if his President changes policy, he will, too. He never said that he personally agreed with or supported re-signing the legislation.

Garand, sunset or no sunset, America as the land of the free and home of the brave is dead and gone and you might as well get used to it. alphabeta121 hit the nail directly on the head--when the majority of people have come to believe that we need big government and socialist systems, the struggle is over. Coloring Bush as a "far right conservative" just shows how far around the bend our nation is at this point. Bush is pretty damned liberal in fact--ignoring the Constitution, etc. I now only await the final plummet to the bottom of the slippery slope we are on. At this point, it will only take a small nudge to push our nation into chaos. Look at the riots in Cinncinatti--chaos is all boiling just below the surface. I'd say an economic depression would about do it.
Link Posted: 8/3/2001 4:28:18 PM EDT
nah, i'll respectfully disagree trickshot. See there will be no flashpoint precipitating a widespread insurrection. First see kali-style AW ban at the federal level, 50 cal ban, semiauto ban, handgun ban, sniperrifle ban. okay so that leaves shotguns and .22 LR rifles. Now please tell me when the population of america rises up. Oh wait, i'll tell you the answer, it won't. Americans have been conditioned in our mandatory socialist indoctrination centers (read:public schools), to the extent that we look at ENGLAND, the very friggin country we rebelled from as a model. So yes we'll see more isolated uprisings, a few more waco's, a few more oklahoma city's, but I refuse to believe that the 20 percent of this country who gives damn could muster the support for a real rebellion. sorry for the bad news. alphabeta121
Link Posted: 8/3/2001 4:50:18 PM EDT
There won't be any uprising/disobedience. Look at the common gun owner: -35-50 years old -Probably has a good job - " making good cash -family -well entrenched in social lives You can never count on them to revolt. The only ones that riot are the damn greenie liberals anymore.
