after you had bought it, what would you do?  Say you bought a used car in the AS IS condition and then found money of some other valuable should you tell the previous owner.  What if the car hand changed owners a few times?

I bought a used Mercury LN7 way back when I was in highschool. When I recarpeted the heap, I found a female gold chain near the driver's side rear wheel well in a small ziplock bag, and gave it to my girlfriend at the time. Did I do the right thing?

Ok look at it from the other view point.  What if ya bought a used car and found a bunch of worthless crap in it.  Would ya tell the previous owner??  Once you take possession of something whatever it contains is yours also.  Keep it.

If it belonged to Jesus, He would put it in a moldy bag in the right rear floorboard of a '71 Maverick and lead me to buy the car and thereafter find the cash and spend it with a clear and grateful conscience. The money would doubtless be from the 1973 robbery of a now-defunct bank whose shareholders were paid off by insurance before my 16th birthday. He often operates that way, so far as I can tell.

Whoever bought my old POS car undoubtedly found a mess of used brass rattling around the trunk I don't want.  They can keep it, if you ahve a spare tire well and a pail or two of mixed brass dumps it is next to impossible to get it all. I was findng brass for 3 years.

My son bought a well used Mercedes yesterday.  There was a small but heavy box in the trunk and we started speculating about what it could be.  Turns out it was a complete extra set of lugnuts.  Before we opened the box we were joking about it being full of gold.  That's what got me thinking about this topic.

The previous owner said he could keep the lugnuts.

Another twist... Say you buy an older house, and in the attic, you find an antique chair, which turns out to be quite valuable. Do you track down every former owner of the house, or their heirs, to give away something they didn't know about in the first place? How do you determine which former owner the chair belonged to?

Nope! It's yours.

Not to Hijack this thread too much, but...

How the hell does anyone leave a pistol anywhere without knowing it?

I can understand rings and chains and stuff like that.  Maybe even money - but a firearm?  I know where all my firearms are whether it's the .40 in the car, the extra AR at dad's, the .357 in my bedroom, the .40 in the livingroom, etc., etc.????

I know a guy who found $20,000 in an attic above his newly purchased garage.

He ran his mouth about it and the old owners found out.

I guess it was their Grandpa's stash. All old $20's, he ended up splitting it with them.

My friend owns an autobody shop and from time to time drug dealers/gangbangers bring in their car w/ bullet holes and wants it to be fixed My friend calls the cops after they leave to make a report as they have found several pistols and bags of dope hidden in compartments. Most of the time, the scumbags never come back for the car as it was stolen, and they just used it as a way to ditch it.

I told him that if he ever finds any really nice guns in an abandoned car to give me a call first...

We have found guns ditched in our back alley trash bins before by gangs, but they are always too crappy to keep, and we hand them in to the cops. Some of them had the S/N filed down

You are probably more likely to find drugs in a used car than anything else...probably not the best thing to return to the previous owner...

Depends on what it is....

Someone's wedding ring? I know I'd try to return that. $6.00 in change, a half eaten sandwich and a cufflink? Probably not.

I bought a Toyota truck one time and when I was cleaning it out found a bong under the seat.

My mother sold her dad's car to a friend of ours and he found a $100.00 bill in a small cut in the edge of the visor. My mom said that he could keep it since it came with the car.

5 years ago a local family bought a used Hertz rental vehicle, a 1999 ford expedition.

When the window stopped working and wouldn't go down, the new owners took it to a local dealer mechanic, who removed the inside door trim and found marijuana stuffed inside the door.

49.3 pounds were eventually recovered from the vehicle. How'd ya like to be caught w/ that?

I own a used car lot.  When the trade ins come in, one of our favorite past times is treasure hunting.  I've found some cool stuff.

Once, as I was detailing a truck I had just taken in, I opened the center console and found a Glock 27.  I returned that one, he was mighty glad to have it back.

Another time I lowered a sun visor and found $800.  That one was picked up a the dealer auction so I had no way of knowing who the money belonged to.  It financed my first few AK purchases.

You find strange things in cars, I've found everything from diamond rings to ziploc bags full of feces.

If you buy a used car as is, the car and the contents are yours.  If it has something in it you don't really want you are stuck having to get rid of it.  You cannot call the previous owner and make them deal with it.  Conversly, if there is a bonus in the trunk or under the seat, then that is yours too.
