I suspect that while perhaps not true to the general population, most of us on this forum have an inner drive to be productive. So, If you were forced to leave your job today, with a 4 million severance - what would you do with your life? 4 million is enough to modestly live comfortably the rest of your life. Part of the severance is a do not compete clause - you can not go elsewhere and continue your current occupation/profession. Just for comparison, feel free to add your political preference and religion. I am especially curious if religion has correlations.
---- First, I used to work construction - so my first hobby would be to build my own (VERY energy efficient) house on the ranch. After that I am split. I would like to become more a more involved rancher, but am also tempted to go into teaching - as the children are the future. Ranching is not full time, it is all the time. Teaching would give a better mix of time working and time elsewhere. Likewise teaching would not interfere with time with my children. Catholic "compassionate" Republican |

Build guns. Make ammo. Shoot stuff. Buy more ham gear, antennas, radios. Fix up my Bronco, Fix up my WJ, Fix up my SRT-4, Fix up Wodstock's ZJ. Declutter the house. Clean up the lawnmower. Drink some beer.
ETA: Finally get some time to use all my Commodore equipment. |
Hunt, fish and party with hot chicks wearing Mossy Oak all day everyday.
I have already decided that when I retire as an engineer I will become a high school science teacher.
I don't think you could find a more rewarding job than teaching kids to be amazed by the world around them. |
Buy a remote island and not see another Human being again unless I choose too.
Sit on a warm tropical beach drinking excessively while getting BJs from hot island chicks. I would want to go fishing a few times a week as well.
Golf, fishing.
Repeat in whatever order in whatever location strikes my fancy. Throw in some hunting too. |
Walmart greeter. unless kept busy, retirement can get pretty boring.
Walk the Earth, like Caine in "Kung Fu," get in adventures and shit
Hike, camp, mountain bike, kayak, raft, snowshoe, snowboard, ski and motorcycle more.
Add a third kayak or more likely paddleboard to the gear, maybe get a small travel trailer for longer outings in the mountains. Maybe get another motorcycle (KTM 690 Enduro if I could get past the fears it will be breaking down constantly). Do some road trips. Probably expand my garden and get some home/yard improvement projects done. |
Continue what I am doing now
Building guns/silencers, teaching band kids, race drag cars. Just with a bigger garage and more projects |
Post in GD all day from my moms basement
Probably buy some land and open a medium sized range & airsoft/paint ball fields |
If you did not have to work for a living, what would you do? Divide my time between having sex and sitting on the couch eating bon-bons. |
Climb mountains in the winter and Spring (and early summer) and surf for the rest of the time.

Fishing guide.
-Fish every day -Get paid to fish -Always have someone to fish with -Someone else pays for gas. -Fish for dinner. |

I'm retired (next month, but on leave now)
I think it is critical to organize a school / program to "deprogram" children from the dependency / self centered / pathetic / excuse-based, life that they learn in both school, and at home. America is in desperate need of Leaders, Gentlemen, Ladies, Critical Thinkers, and Bold actors. I'm also researching ideas for a company or companies that employ young adults with autism. Not a charity, or foundation that depends on "free money". |

More of what I already do now in my leisure time: making music, watching movies and reading books.
ETA: Enjoying nature (including my dogs and cats) but that's just part of daily life, not an activity, per se. |
I would spend a lot more time at the volunteer fire department I currently spend a lot of my time at.
Drive across USA in a small SUV & buy drinks & dinner for as many ARFCOMMERs as would be willing to meet with Me.
And shoot stuff. The Ol' Crew Chief |

Quoted: ... 4 million is enough to modestly live comfortably the rest of your life... View Quote And that is exactly what I would do. We have no debt and already live modestly/reasonably, so I would live similarly to my current life except replacing time spent at work with time enjoyed with family and my hobbies. I might still teach/lecture now and them, but only when and because I wanted to do so. YMMV. |

LIbertarian athiest.
I would garden more, and cook for others much more than 1 time a week. |

You would find me on the hiking trails every day. This right here! Hiking, climbing, paddling, fishing, etc., and a few little volunteer efforts. Perfect summation. In fact, that's the surefire way you could tell I won the lottery. I'd stop posting everywhere on the web and I'd disappear onto the trails for the first 6 months easy. |

My dream would be to sail around, maybe circumnavigate. Realistically, who knows. Buy old houses and flip them, like the Rehab Addict. |
I'd do more of what I already do when I'm not working... play LOTS of guitar and hang with the family some more. Travel much more as well.

If I didn't have to work for a living I'd be a bum. I'd work out and spend all my time outdoors. Island hop the Caribbean for the remainder for my life on my Bertram 70' sportfish. Time would be spent fishing, meeting new people wherever my travels take me, having fun and enjoying life.
Now in reality I'm only 21 so I'd really only do that for a while. I'd want to have a family so just recreate what I just wrote in a US or New Zealand setting. I'd wake up in the morning go for a swim, run, workout, fish, hunt, sail, socialize, and do whatever else brings me joy each and every day. A lot of golf too. Truthfully I don't really need to be productive in the sense of creating anything. I might pick up a coaching gig at a high school for cross country or something but any other 'work' is just not appealing. Political preference and religion are Libertarian and Humanist respectively for whatever that's worth. |

Build dream house, invest 3/5ths, donate 1/6th, get a new job...not exactly in that order.
