People always ask the cliche "If you could only have one gun"... Well, most of us thankfuly aren't such a small boat....

If you could only have 5 of the guns you currently own-

2 Rifles
2 Handguns
1 Shotgun

What would they be and why?

Rifle 1) SAR-2- I already have tons of ammo laid back, and it's just too damn accurate and reliable to pass up.

Rifle 2) 10/22. I don't ned to explain anything here

Handgun 1) Glock 20 10MM. Best hand gun ever. 16 rounds of 600 FPE. There isn't a gun that comes close.

Handgun 2) High Standard HD Military- Finest rimfire pistol I have ever shot. I like it so much, I overpaid when I aquired I had to have it so bad.

Shotgun 1) Rem-870

AR15        - Just cause.
Rem.541-S   - Have State light rifle high score with it.

Kimber 1911 - Always wanted one.
HS2000      - What the hell, everyone else seems to like it.

Rem.870     - Already have one. Don't need anymore shotguns.

AR10T 308 for long shots
M4gery flattop 223 for CQB
Kimber Gold Match 45 for defense

Remington 870 Express Magnum 12 ga. w/18.5" barrel and slug sights for home defense/hunting/utility.

Rifle 1 - Sig SHR-970 .280 rem. Just plain the best shooting bolt gun I have.
Rifle 2 - Pre-ban DPMS 16" heavy. 3pos stock. Ciener kit for .22 as a bonus.
Handgun 1 - S&W 625 .45acp. plain the best hangun I have shot for accuracy & stopping power.
Handgun 2- Ruger mk2 5.5"stainless heavy bbl.
Shotgun - Rem 870 no question. The tubes make it so damn versitile you can do almost anything with it.

One HP sniper rifle. (Several good candidates)
One .308 Battle rifle. (Several good candidates)
One .223 Assault Rifle. (Several good candidates)
One submachine gun. (Several good candidates)
One combat shotgun. (Several good candidates)

I would aslo prefer a 6th, one combat handgun of which there are several good candidates.

But with the above 5 I could aquire any additional weapons or equipment I would ever need in an environment where policy or situation restricted my firearms down to this number.

Landon,
Great thread.

Everyone should have a 10/22, 870, and Ruger MkII/Buckmark - "Requisite Starter Pack."

Then,
.38/.357 J-frame snubby, and/or 4" 686/GP100 type.
9mm & .45acp in Glock/Sig/Beretta.
Optional addition, big revolver - .44mag/.454.

More AR's than will fill the safe.

If only 5 tho,
Colt 6530, 6731, 6724
ArmaLite m15a4tc, Carbon-15 97 pistol,
since the .223rem is the perfect cartridge,
or was it .22lr . . .

They're all good.

I am just going to use what I have in stock currently.
1) .223 Bushmaster Shorty
2) .308 M1A Springfield Scout
3) 12GA 870
4) .45 H&K Tactical
5) .357 Model 19

Landon makes a nice point about having a .22. But I could still use the AR for small game, but also have the increased power if needed.

Reason I asked is that during Hurricaine Floyd evacuation (What a damn farce that was. Largest evac in US history), I had very limited space, and there were a rash of house break-ins while eveyrone was away. Thankfully, I wasn't hit, but if I had been, I would have been limited to my guns on hand that I had brought with me.
I got to thinking...

If Floyd had hit my area, at that particular time, it would have been the most devestating Hurriaine in US history. It was a category 4 at the time, and the projected storm surge would have been a 40 foot wall of water. The storm was the rough mass of the state of Texas. It was friggin H_U_G_E! My home is on a barrier Island, so it would have been toast, along with the rest of my guns.
In that situation, WTSHTF would have been a reality (It damn near was during the evacuation- People were fighting in the middle of the road. It took 9 hours to drive an otherwise 1 hour trip the traffic was so blocked)

If I have to do that again, I will be limited to 5 guns. My beloved .50 will have to stay behind, since it is just too big.

Landon,
Bummer.
Thought it was 5 you most want,
instead of 5 you can keep.

Prolly be the 5 most expensive/hardest to replace.

5. Benelli Super Black Eagle 12 ga autoloader(mine is the realtree camo finish one)

Well lets see:

  1) Springfield M1A
  2) Colt .223 Carbine
  3) Glock G26 (my carry gun)
  4) ParaOrdnance P14
  5) Baretta 1201 FP3

remember the evacuation, I-4 a total standstill. And the funny part is there were alot of people who didn't even take the evacuation seriously because the storm was running parallel to the coast. Can't imagine what the evacuation routes would look like if it was percieved as a serious threat.

I remember Floyd!  I may not have hit y'all, but it sure hit me!  I stayed at my parents during the storm and we got about 21 inches of rain that night.  Two day later, I tried to make it home.  The usual 1 hour drive took over 3 hours.  Everything was ok at home though.

1. DSA Carbine; Leupold 6x42 scope. No flash suppressor/brake.

2. Remington 870 Express Super Mag 12-ga.; set up with the 20" rifle sight bbl. and Choate Pistol grip buttstock/forend and Millett mount/NIKON 1.5-4.5 scope unit.

3 & 4.  Beretta 96's in .40 cal.  A Centurion and a Standard model, both with the safety/decocker.  12 10-rd. Beretta magazines and 155-gr. Remington JHP ammo.

5. Ruger Single-Six Convertible revolver in 5.5" bbl.; with the .22LR & .22 Magnum cylinders.

No AR-15.
Only 5.
Can carry only so many firearms and ammo/mags.
May have only a couple of adults to carry and use these 5.
I want a heavier caliber than .223 so I can hunt.
The 12-ga. lets me hunt close with slugs or birdshot.
The .40's are used by the Border Patrol, as is that ammo.
The .22 revolver is as reliable as an anvil, and the Magnum cylinder is useful, even for little shotshells.

Man, I remember when that thing was waaaaaaaay out in the ocean, it was so defined even all the way out there b4 even hitting the gulf stream! I pretty much said to my family "Well, everone, pack up... That's gunna be a pain in the ass.."
Sure enough!
Can you imagine if that thing had hit when it was near Florida?
It was a friggin Category 5 the size of Texas!
It would have made Andrew look like a light sprinkle.
Wherever it would have hit, if it had hit Florida, would have been completley wiped off the face of the map. The end. No more.
Even the mild feeder bands we got when it was 200 miles off shore were 70+ MPH!

That thing sucked. Gave me a whole new respect for 'caines that I never really had before.

Landon,

I have no doubt that everyone on the coast and inland waterway were smart enough to scoot after the warning but other than that I don't think too many people were moving. Remember that just about every hotel room up to Gainsville was taken but my point was that I don't think it was a warning that everyone in the danger area was heeding although it was a sizeable evacuation (may have been largest ever even but don't think there have been too many evacs in last 20-30 yrs- Florida's largest growth period). So my point was if there is ever a real serious evacuation basically, unless you bail way ahead of time, you're pretty much f#%*ed on the evacuation routes. I drove I-4 to work and West bound was just a total bumperlock as far as the eye could see during the evacuation.

Rifle 1)Remington 700 in .308 - Reach out and touch someone.  Ammo readily available.

Rife 2) My Bushmaster Dissipator.  Do I even need to list why?

Handgun 1) My Glock 21 - I beat the hell out of it and it just keeps going "bang!".  Ammo readily available.

Handgun 2) Ruger GP100 4" - First choice would have been a *&* 686.  But the Ruger is a good, reliable wheelgun in a proven caliber for if/when the Glock decides it's time to stop going "bang!".

Shotgun 1) Mossberg 590A1 - 9 in the tube, 6 on the sidesaddle and 4 in the speedfeed stock.  Would have picked the 870 but I just gotta be a bit different on something.
