If we should ever get the Fair Tax or some other version and scrap the tax code (and maybe the IRS), would NFA weapons instantly become something that we could buy just like any other weapon of the same type (handgun, rifle, etc.), or would there still be some other basis they'd use to keep the extra control?

I'd be surprised to see the demise of the IRS in my lifetime. Too many people make a great living at deciphering the tax code.

Get rid of the IRS? Ha! That's about as likely as the ATF suddenly being regulated and required to come up with actual rules and guidelines instead of just making things up as they go and stomping all over everyone.

Still doesn't answer the question though. Is there anything else would keep NFA restricted, or would they instantly be equal to current semi-autos?

Under section 3 of the NFA, it specifically states that the money will be paid to the comissioner of the IRS, if the IRS were to go away, there would be a virtual stop on all NFA transfers till the NFA either gets thrown out or ammended.

Actually, The ATF is special a division of the IRS set up to collect taxes on... You guessed it, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
So, when the ATF kicks your door in, it is essentially for tax evasion.

I thought I read somewhere the ATF tried to get themselves moved out from the Treasury Dept....did they?

If so scrapping the IRS wouldn't solve that problem.
