I have problems even considering it seeing as the country dividing along the lines it did in the 1860s would be insanely improbable.
Interior, Rockies, and the South versus the West Coast, Great Lakes region, and Northeast would be far more workable in today's America. In which case, the former would win overwhelmingly despite a population disadvantage. |

The next civil war will not be between the North and the South.
It will be the Socialists vs. Conservatives, the ones who earn vs the ones who "need", or the People vs. the Govt. In your scenario I would go with the South though. |

Most of you have the "sides wrong".
One side would be from Texas, north to oklahoma and west to the middle or so of California. One side would be mid california north to washington and east to roughly the rockies. Once side would be North of oklahoma to the bcanadian border and east to the mississippi. The last side would be the whole east coast to the mississippi river. |

In your scenario, if the War between the States were fought again, neither side would win. The first War decimated the young men of fighting age. Too many men died. If that were to happen today, since the US is such an important part of the global economic and political fabric, all mayhem would break out. US economic, technological and military power would be weakened for decades, and the likelihood of countries like China surpassing the US in terms of economic and military might would be accelerated by ten years (current projections are 2020, if that war happened today they would probably surpass us in 2-3 years, even WHILE we were fighting such a war). The technological, manufacturing and military might of the US would be depleted against itself, instead of leading the GWOT. This would lead to a big WIN by the terrorists and drug czars. If there was a "winner" it wouldn't be anyone American. ETA: ACK! eta0583 posted two minutes before I did!!! We'd ALL lose.
