HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION:
You are the parent of a 6 year old child. Your kid wants a friend to come over. The parent of this child asks you "I want to make sure my child is safe. Do you have guns in your home?" Do you say? a. No. even though you do? b. Yes, and end it there? c. Yes, and get ready for a confrontation? d. Tell them its none of their business. Here is where I am torn. As a parent I want to know. But, as a gun owner (in today's politically correct climate) I feel it's no one's business. |
D. None of their business.
As a parent, I don't care if my child goes to a house where they have firearms even if they leave them laying around loaded. My son has been well trained on what to do when he sees a gun, and has shown himself to be responsible in that area since he was 3. |
I would tell them yes and then work from whatever response they made next.
Tough call. I can understand you wanting to say no since its none of their business. On the other hand there is nothing wrong with owning guns and saying yes shows that even normal people own firearms.
Usually I just say yes but I keep them all locked in a safe. I then invite the parents to come over with the child if they want, that way they can see for themselves that there is nothing to worry about. I have a few old guns hanging on a wall and when most parents see that even those are locked they realize I am a responsible gun owner. However, I never let any of the kids touch or play with them, or the parents for that matter unless I know they are trained. Usually thought my kids and I hang out with people that think like us so for the most part this has happened only a few times. Either way it's your call. But if they are all out of sight no one will ever know. The other plus is if they don't know then they can't be stolden. Sgtar15 |
I'd have to go with
C: Yes, and get ready for a confrontation. I'd wait for any argument they could put up and refute it point-by-point. If they want to base their lives on pure emotion rather than using reason and logic, I'm not sure I'd want my child to be exposed to that section of the gene pool anyway. Then again, I don't have any children, so my answer probably doesn't carry a lot of weight. |
I'd say something like
"yes, and they are secured so that children can't play with them, my kids knows gun safety and won't take your kid near them, I'll keep an eye on your kid, as long as your kid doesn't go snooping around he'll be fine." |
I would say 'yes'... and 'Why, would you want your kid sleeping over in a house that wasn't protected...'
Give 'em a tour of your place... |
My older sister is 100% percent anti-gun, and I was posed with the same question when she wanted to bring the kids by on Halloween. I told her yes, and then when she started in on me, I told her before she judged me too quickly, to come over and check out the place first. I had all the guns way out of reach, and more importantly, out of sight. Her kids don't know the first thing about guns, and I didn't want their curiosity to get the best of them. After she inspected the place, all was good. Maybe you could offer the same "tour" and show 'em what you got for security purposes? Worked for me.
Being the smartassed jerk that I am, I'd probably say something like, "I'll answer your intimately personal question if you'll answer mine".
Yes I do have guns. So, Skippy, does Sally have a tight box or does she have to stand on her head when she pulls her panties off to keep her guts from falling out. |
I would tell the truth and offer to show them to the parents and children. Remember kids that are hidden from guns are usually the ones that wind up hurt. Be honest, and if they can't realize that it is possible to have "safe guns" in the house, screw them. Your child will make plenty of other friends.
I would answer yes, and wait to see what the parents response is. It is refreshing to have parents who care in this day and age, even if it is misguided and based on liberal induced fear tactics. At least they care. I would then try to educate the parent on responsible gun ownership.
As a side note Sling blade "I don't care if my child goes to a house where they have firearms even if they leave them laying around loaded" Even if your child is well trained other kids that may be present most likely have been trained by the movies. |

Shadowblade what about there kids? What about the other kids besides yours thats been asked over?I have a six year old also.He too has shown great responsability in this department.More than a lot of "grown up" people. However he is still six.

I would answer any question reasonably related to their child's safety.
And then I would have a few of my own... I'd ask for and previous addresses, previous names, SSN's, tax returns, credit history, and anything else that they "think I should know about." Check out their car. Have they kept up with the maintenance? Is their house childproofed? Are the handles on their pots and pans kept pointed inward while being used? Do they install new toilet paper rolls in the proper "overhand" fashion? What magazines, cable TV channels, and websites do they suscribe to? Would they have a problem with me conducting a background check on them and their family members? |
It depends, if it was a parent who was a poster on this board, I'd say:
"Don't worry, I have enough guns to equip each family member as well as your kid with a pistol, rifle, and shotgun if the SHTF." |
Why not E)
Sure do... wanna pitch in for the range time and some ammo ... and we will go shooting? Ted... |
If they ask, answer truthfully. Then ask them:
Have you or your spouse ever been convicted of anything more than a minor traffic offense? Does your car have airbags? Do you have a pool? Are you a homosexual? Do you or any of your family do drugs? Are you or your spouse alcoholics? Have you ever hit your children? |
"yes, but if it puts your mind at ease, if some nuts break in to rape and kill out children, i will only shoot at the ones near my kid"
seriously, i dont know, thats a hard spot. i guess it would be bad to lie, and be found out later. if it were me asking you if you said anything other than "yes" my kid might not be spending too much time there. |

Do You Let Your Children Play At Homes Of Liberals or where there could be "Liberal Views"? Do you ask the parents of prospective playmates if they are "liberals" or subscribe to "liberal views?" If so do you request that your child be protected from and not exposed to their "liberal views?" Do you request that excessively liberal persons be "locked up" and stored "out of sight" when your children play at that house? Most people may not think about it, but a suprising number of American homes contain "liberals." It is up to us as parents to warn our children about the danger of liberals and teach them the appropriate response of "Don't touch, Get away fast, tell an adult" should they encounter a liberal. The very scary part is just how many "liberals" are in our childrens schools. Even many teachers are known to possess "liberal views." Is your child in danger? Work with other parents to create "Liberal Free School Zones." See if you can get your principal to enact a ZERO TOLERANCE policy when it comes to liberals. While "liberals" may once have served a purpose long ago they are no longer necessary to society or worth the risk to our children. One need only look at the ravages of liberalism in third world countries to see their true threat. We must do this for the sake... of our children. A public service message from SteyrAUG. |

View Quote Although I think your response would be whitty and would make A point, it would only make the point that gun owners are dangerous, like car accidents, fags, drugs, abuse and convicts. Not exactly the message you'd want to send, even if it is only to point out that their question is an invasion of privacy. My response to an idiodic question like that would depend on my knowledge of the parents and if I thought they might not be smart enough to keep their mouth shut or they were scoping my place out. I know it might be far fetched, but these days you never know. I also always believed that allowing strangers to know about where your guns are and how they are secured is the most fucking stupid thing you could do. Obviously, if someone was close to you and your family, they would know. If they aren't close to your family, I consider it similar to them asking if I drink or if we have a stocked refridgerator....it just isn't something you ask a stranger unless you are looking for a fight, in that case, its D. |

Simple, I never let my daughter, when she was that age, go to anyone's house that I had not personally visited myself on several occasions!
The other kid's parents would come visit me, before their children came over. We would get to know each other well enough that I would know whether the other home contained weapons, and if it did whether the parents were smart enough people who would keep them secure, and they would get to know me the same way! I wouldn't have had it any other way! Eric The(Yes,AndWho'sTheBoyWhoLivesInY'allsAttic?)Hun[>]:)] |

My 9 year olds little buddies new friends mom called me the other week to ask that very question.
He had been to their house a couple of times and had told her about our turkey hunt. Soooo She asked if I had any guns in the house.... I told her yes.. She asked if they were locked up.... I answered that unless I was in the gun room it was locked.. THEN!! I asked her if the gas can for the lawn mower was locked? Were there any matches in the house that were NOT locked up? What about knives? Hammers?? How about those screw drivers?? LOL.......she apologized and the kid came over. As it was I was getting ready for a match and he saw some of my guns. He was mesmerized! When his dad came to pick him up I tendered an invite to take both of them shooting.... Going to have to follow up next week. |
Considering that I had a real world lesson on the fear factor of liberals. I would answer "D" and don't feed the crooks. Out of sight/ out of mind. Guns only worry me when A) its other peoples kids, or B) the parents are not responsible adults and have one loaded under the bed.
I have a play area in the house for kids to play when they are over. Separated from the rest of the house, so they cannot get near them anyway. |

It is NOT their business, hence, the wisdom in getting to know the kid's parents. I bookmarked this thread. |

I would answer "yes, I do have firearms in my house". However, i do feel thats its nobodys business. But since they are concered for their childs safety, i would tell them the truth.

If you tell them it is none of your business they are gonna know you do, and the soccer mom type that your kids' friends' mother probably is won't let the friend come over.
Tell her yes, you do have guns in your house, and THAT is why your child is safe! |
My thoughts are you should get to know the parents of the kids yours are friends with. And by doing that you will beable to judge their opion of firearms ownership before it would an issue.
If you did not know them from adam don't tell them anything. Also if your kids are older it is quite possible they may all ready know from your own kids talking to their kids. Only by telling them it is none of there buisness you would not reveil any thing about what you own. My answer it is not any of their friggin buisness. However, If you like the parents of the kids yours hang around with it may be the oportuinity to introduce a non shooter to the sport. |
I said yes but I keep them locked up.. I then explained that I really wouldn't want any one elses kids around my guns unless I knew they were trained in gun safety and use.. He came over... 6 months later I took him with my son and I on his first shoot... 4 years later he's a gun nut...

Mom is an outright Conservative with an F-ck You Attitude" (which is cool) and Dad is a closet Conservative that backs the kids up when it comes to the art of shooting. The reason why I put this post up is because I have always been taught "keep your mouth shut on what guns we own. Its NO ONE's business" yet, you are caught in that quandry (like that word?) that, Heaven forbid and accident should happen, the parent would come back and say "HEY!!! You told me you had no guns" My guns ARE locked up, but its not my kids that I dont trust. Its the kids who have that HIGH CURIOUSITY factor because their parents cant teach the safety of a firearm. So, I guess I would rather go through the hassle then say one day: "Oh CRAP, I shoulda ... " THANKS FOR NOT FLAMING. |

My kids won't be staying anywhere where I haven't personally met the parents and visited their house. If I was staying at someone's house, you can damn sure believe that my parents had met them, been to their house, and probably played 42, peanuckle, and poker with them. If they hadn't, I sure as hell wasn't staying overnight there. Since we bought a house and had kids, we've had exactly two kids stay with us for anything longer than an hour, and that was my nextdoor neighbor's kids on the last day of school last year. He was working as a US Marshal and wouldn't be able to be home when they got out early. So, they got off the bus, headed to my house, and we watched movies and they played with my daughter until their dad got home. He knew I had guns in the house, and by seeing how I handled them, he knew his kids were safe. As a matter of fact, had I not had a weapon, he probably wouldn't have let his kids stay with us. He's one of those non-PC cops that thinks everyone should be well-armed and prepared to defend themselves. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
