I've had it happen to me a few times especially when shopping for groceries. Every great once and while, the person working the register doesn't scan an item properly or doesn't pay attention to what they are doing and I end up with free food.
My question is do you speak up about it or even go so far as to turn around and pay after noticing it? |

Yes, its good for the soul to go out of your way to be honest and do the right thing.

I look over the receipt when I pay, and if something is missing, or scanned twice, I'll speak up. Would I drive back for either case? If it's less than $20, no, and in general you lose your right to dispute a over charge when you leave the store, and that works both ways.

I do. I even go back to pay the few cents they let me slide on when I don't have the loose change.

I have made the cashier check when I didn't hear something "beep". She didn't understand that I "wanted" to be charged. The look of confusion on her face was priceless. |

I've had people that I was shopping with yell at me and do the whole "what the hell is wrong with you?" speech because I'll pull a "oh, you forgot THIS".

If I catch it at the moment, of course I do. Leaving a store with an item I know I didn't pay for is stealing. If it was something I didn't catch until I got home, I doubt I would go back for a few bucks, if it was something bigger, maybe.

I ask myself "what would I want my son to do in this case", and then I speak up and correct their error.
Recently, I had a Chik-fil-a worker give me a three one dollar bills and a five dollar bill instead of four one dollar bills in change at the drive thru. I noticed the error after I had pulled away. It was lunch hour and I had to park way on the other side of the parking lot to go in and fix it, but I did it. It feels good to do the right thing in a world where most people just don't give a shit. |

I've gotten out to my car and realized they didn't scan something, or that one of my kids clepto'd something. I turn right around to take it back or buy it. Anything else is theft.

Yes. In 10 years I will remember that didn't pay for it and it won't sit well with me and I will remember it every time I go back into the store, but the amount of money I "saved" will be meaningless.
I still regret little thefts like this I did 20 years ago, and endeavour not to repeat them. |

I wouldn't want them scanning the same thing twice and screwing me. The golden rule is a good thing. |

Yes. Just the other day I got into the parking lot and realized I hadn't paid for a book that was under my purse in the cart. Back in I went.
Once I went back days later when I realized I'd accidentally stuck something in my bag and forgot to pay for it. I like to think karma has noticed because I've had some lost things returned to me in some really bizarre ways. |

Years ago when #1 son was about eight or nine, we were in a hardware store getting paint. I grabbed another one, told an employee about the mess, then went to the cashier and told her to ring up two gallons of paint. He "got it" when I told him that I wasn't about to teach my son that I would allow others to pay for my mistakes that deprived them of their goods, services or income. |

I got two gallons of paint awhile back and just got charged for one went back and told the guy and he was suprised and sold it to me $5 off. hey $5 bucks is $5 bucks |

Grocery? I don't think they have EVER missed an item in years of shopping. However, those fuckers purposely do not change prices on sale items. Nothing like being 5 days into a sale and they are charging full price, ripping off everyone who buys that item. I bust them all the time.
Home Depot used to be extremely bad. Lately it seems they are getting better training. |

And it has cost me soooooooo much time on a couple of occasions waiting in customer service lines to make sure the store gets their money. So now I am just really vigilant at the register and try to be polite "I think you forgot that." I've also been giving incorrect change on many occasions, usually in my favor. Once I got a twenty instead of a five from a girl who was chatting on her cell while trying to do her job. She mouthed "thank you." Idiot. |

Yes. I was remodeling our house back in November and I had two of the flat carts full of stuff, mostly light fixtures and fans. I got home (over 20 miles away) and started checking everything off and realized I hadn't been charged for an $80 fan. The next time I was there (it happened to be the next day) I told them about it. It took a while before they understood that I wasn't saying I was overcharged but undercharged. They couldn't believe that I wanted to pay for it.
What's right is right and what's honest is honest. One of the Lowe's employees told me that if it was them they wouldn't have said anything. |

I'm usually home by the time I've figured out this has happened.

I sure do! I always accuse them of not charging me the right amount. They always get defensive and insist they charged the correct amount. Then I point out the item they missed. I love the look on their face when they discover I was right.

I was at a clothing store about 2 years ago and I purchased something like 4 button-up shirts and 3 pairs of chino khaki pants. When I got to my car, I realized they didn't ring up 1 of the pants...which was about $85. I took them back to the store, told the clerk what had happened and he looked stunned. It was like he couldn't understand why someone coming back to the store to get charged more.
Anyway, he called his manager and he gave me 50% off the pants and a 30% off coupon for my next purchase. |

Of course. I don't understand people who don't. Your integrity is the only thing you truly own. Once you give it away, you don't get it back.
