"Truck" in quotes because it's for a 05-15 Toyota Tacoma.

Seller says it has no identifying marks since he bought it used two years ago, and he has no idea on the brand and model names.  Can anyone provide info based on the pictures below?  He says he paid about $1300, and wants $1200.  Supposedly it is in near-perfect condition.  I'll know when I look at it tonight.

Is this a good deal?

I'm not directly posting the craigslist link because I'm concerned about violating the CoC sales rules.

two years of depreciation on a no name used canopy?

What's it worth to you? Who cares what he paid for it?

Here's a vaguely similar one link

Here's a leer for 300 bones.

Sounds like you can do better shopping around new and finding out what a new one would cost vs used, then base off that.

I'd spend $100 more to get a new one. Those don't really good their value to well so used I'd say its worth $500 or so.

I am stopping by a local Leer dealer today before I check out the used one to see what I can get new, so I'll see what options I have.

Cool!  Definitely consider your options!

That looks similar to an A.R.E. cap, by the brake light, carpet and trim.

ETA: But the dual T-handles mean it's probably a LEER

The only problem that I forsee with going new, is that I need a cap or other solution in the next week and a half before I move across the country.  I'm not sure the dealer will be able to have a new one made in that time frame (I didn't realize how long it can take until I started looking last weekend).

So I may be at the mercy of the local used market, which suffers from inflated bay area prices.

It sounds like given the advice here, my time constraints, and the local market, I'll probably offer $600-700 if buying new isn't an option.

That looks like an A.R.E. cap, you can tell by the brake light.  Have one on my dad's F150 supercrew, fits great.

Thanks!  That is helpful.  I thought it looked a bit like A.R.E. because of the shape of the rear door.  From what I understand those do command a bit of a higher price than something like a Leer.

Are you worried about it being pretty and fitting 100%? Because if not, and all you're worried about is keeping your stuff more secure and out of the elements, then really anything that will clamp to the bed rails will work.   I would imagine you can get some 80's and 90's canopies for under $200, sometimes you can find them free! Then just shit can it when you get where you're going or resell it.

I considered going this route, but I don't have much time right now to look at options that might fit.  Also it is about a 2500 mile drive, and I don't want to be worrying about failure of whatever Red Green Show worthy mounting solution I come up with.

From what I understand, the plastic bed on these 2nd gen Tacos is incompatible with many of the mounting solutions for non-model-specific caps.

I don't care about color, but a good fit would be nice.  I probably will continue to use the cap as a quick place to sleep after arriving late at night during deer season, and to prevent snow from piling up in the bed.

I'm not looking to spend as little money as possible.  I just want to avoid getting ripped off, so that if I do decide to resell I won't lose more than a couple hundred bucks.

I agree.  Used caps are about worthless.  I practically had to give mine away.

Well reasoned!  Well, in this case yea, if the one you found fits all of your requirements for fit and mounting, but time is a factor, then to you it would be worth more to just get it an be done with.  Is the asking price high?  Yea...  might be able to talk him down pretty good. If you can talk him down to 7-800, paying a few hundred over going rate is a price of convenience sometimes to buy piece of mind.

Too high...
Tell him it's going to cost $600 to get it paint matched to your truck and if he can't come down, you'll order a new one.

I found one for my brother's F150 supercrew, the right color even.  Said they bought it a year ago, used it one time and it's been sitting in the dirt ever since.  Got it for $500

I met the seller yesterday, and we couldn't make a deal.  He insisted on $1100 even though the local Leer dealer had a very similar brand new color-matched shell in stock for $1400.

Drove a bit further this morning to look at a much more reasonably priced used A.R.E. MX series.  As a bonus it has a roof rack.  It's in good shape except the rivets on the rear win-door frame broke, causing it to bend a small amount near the last rivets to fail, and fall off.  Apparently it has seen a lot of use on rough unimproved roads.  The win-door itself is in fine shape; it's just the frame that needs some work.  None of the rivet holes cracked; it was the rivets themselves that failed.

Bought it for $300.  I'm going to bend and re-rivet the window frame tonight.  I might drill a couple extra rivet holes to help prevent it from happening again.  I'll double check the rivets on the front and side windows while I'm at it.
