OK, here we have a REAL possible SHTF situation what with the hurricane, mandatory evacuation, and all those sorts of things...

Two possible scenarios: You refuse evacuation for whatever reason, and you must defend your home/family/neighborhood;

Or, you are evacuating across country(along with MILLIONS of others)...

This is the kingdom of the AR. Forget about juries; if you do not have a plan and armament you may very well be dead.

So, given that your LIFE may depend on the equipment you choose, what should the configuration of your AR be?
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 6:13:40 PM EDT
Best AR configuration would be a nice rail mounted helicopter to fly your butt far away from the monster storm.
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 6:14:59 PM EDT
A rail mounted floatation device?
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 6:15:46 PM EDT
Are you drunk or something?
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 6:16:34 PM EDT
The one you already have set up and have trained with.

At this point it seems a little late to be messing around with configurations.

Link Posted: 8/28/2005 6:17:13 PM EDT
You live in California. I've got $5 says you already turned in your AR.
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 6:17:45 PM EDT
Rail mounted helicopter and flotation devices sound best. With winds of 175 mph and 20 to 30 foot storm surge your not going to have a house left.

+1. Thats the first thing that popped in my head when I read the title. This is not a situation where you should even attempt to defend your home. This is a situation to carry your ass as quickly as possible, defending your home is ok when after the crisis you will still have a home. Welcome to lake Nawlins people. We're already getting people here from the coast and we're like 500 miles away.

This is the single best response to any thread that I've seen in a long time. Bravo!

How exactly will an AR defend your home/family/neighborhood from a hurricane? If you're in NO right now, that's what's most likely to kill you.

Or, you are evacuating across country(along with MILLIONS of others)...

NO has way less than a million residents.

NO has way less than a million residents.

FNC was reporting upwards of 4 million in the greater metro NO area, but only 500,000 NO proper residents.

Yes, thats one of the scenarios I outlined. All of those people, the usual percentage of our finest criminals mixed amongst them, and you would be without a firearm for self defense?

Two or three days go by...no food distribution...

Sure, YOU thought ahead and have food, but what about the urban types?

There may or may not be law and order. Even if there is, the effected area may be hundreds of square miles in extent, so if trouble starts are you gonna bet your life that Authority will be there to protect you?

I find your screen name "storm surge" very appropriate. Did you plan that?

Given the 20 - 30 foot water that's being called for in NoLo?

An AR-15 than can be "aqua bumped"

Ahh... I stand corrected.

I didn't mean in the City itself...just the surrounding environs.

In outlying areas, its People not Water you'd have to worry about.

Or don't you think so...

Nearly any config will do as long as it goes bang, you're accurate with it, and you've got plenty of ammo. Preferably several so your household can be "heavily armed". I'd prefer the 16" for urban work, but a 20" would do. Hell, an AK would do.

One about 250 miles inland.

I wonder what will be left of Sodom and Gamorrah after Katrina has her way!! I knew New O'leans was doomed when Girls Gone Wild made all those movies there..........

Well.. I can tell you, I am evacuated from New Orleans with my MSTN built SPR clone and my Sig 229... For me, it is the perfect set-up since it is what I grabbed on my way out the door yesterday when I evacuated..

All of them.

You wouldn't just take one would you? And leave the others to drown?

What optic you got on the SPR? a 3x9 might no work so well for short ranges.

Something like this, so you can launch a flare, and the Coast Guard can find you.

Thanks to the ARFCOMMER who owns this rifle. Hope you don't mind that I posted this pic.

Really doesnt matter what the configuration would be because you're now fish food!!!!!!!
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 7:42:23 PM EDT
Something you can fire while wearing two 80's,BCD,fist and second stage, mask, fins. ammo should work as weight belt.
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 7:46:59 PM EDT
OK, let me try again, for those who didn't bother reading the actual first post...

You are in an area that has been evacuated, but not inundated. You are there to protect your property from looters...

or

You are well away from the flooded areas, in the middle of a bunch of refugees...

No floodwaters anywhere in sight. Just a sea of humanity.

Heck, since you're going to be SOL for a while and not have much to live on, I'd take an AK,SKS, or FAL....something that runs better dirty.... But that's my opinion. And a larger caliber would be nice too, because there are going to be some displaced gators out there and other critters...Ghetto goblins.

Oh great another "what if/what gun should i use if " thread. How many AR15s do you have? If you have 1 choose that one...if you have more than one, choose one of the others. I think you should use the search button and type in "SHTF." Every senerio ever thought of would come up...including this one. These threads always end the same way.

ETA: fuck it might aswell chim in on the bandwagon!

SIG P220 .45 w/ Bushmaster LEO 16inch 4pos colapsable stock w/removable carry handle, black hawk tactical sling, and bayonett.

Are you fuckers happy now?
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 8:48:38 PM EDT
Yes, but now SHTF discussions regain relevance when it looks like one might actually happen...
