Not so much because it's less expensive, but more so because of the looks. Probably end up being my trunk gun.

Wow, just wow. I really have nothing to say on this one. I'd take the AR ANYDAY. Function is greater than looks.

I'd go with an AK for a trunk gun. Cheaper rifle Cheaper ammo Cheaper mags

The mini can take alot of crap and lack of "love" Its really not a bad rifle don't waste your money on cheap Hi Caps buy PMI's, masens, or ruger factory.

I think you're on the wrong board. This is "AR15.com" not "Mini14.com." WGAF?

This should be good. [getting popcorn] CH

I'm actually going to second getting the AK. Cheap ammo, cheap mags, easy to maintain. If you can't afford an AR, get an AK.. IBTL?

Knock yourself out. I was going through the same quandry last year. Chose the Bushmaster. No comparison. Yeah, I would rather use a Mini14 in the trunk than my nice AR15, but one is a battle weapon, the other a plinker IMO.

That's why I posted it in the GD Forum rather than the AR15 Forum. Putting it over there would have been inciting a riot.

Isn't it nice that there are multitudes of flavors to choose from when it comes to firearms than just the AR15?

Bingo. Oh, and welcome back, Milsurp... [rolleyes]

whats the reason for a trunk gun? a plinker? poacher? dont like leaving it at home? if i was going to keep on in the trunk it would be an AR with Aimpoint, collapsable stock, and extra mags. my main reason for having it is hoping for the best and prepared for the worst.
Link Posted: 11/28/2003 12:10:51 PM EDT
I think you would be better off with an SKS. Better and more accurate gun, far lower cost.

The reason for a trunk gun is the reason you give, however, should your trunk gun be stolen, it's a wad of cash if it's a quality AR with optics and mags. AK's, OTOH, are just as effective but MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE, so are, IMHO, better trunk guns. My SHTF BO weapon is still the AR...

Finally someone who buys his guns based on rational reasons - looks! Not form, function, caliber, accuracy, serviceablity, ergonomics, cost ....
Link Posted: 11/28/2003 12:14:42 PM EDT
That's nuts. You would be much better off with an AK, a SKS, or best yet, an AR-15.
Link Posted: 11/28/2003 12:16:00 PM EDT
I dunno, the AR-15 is much more beautiful than a Mini-14.

What they said. The AK would be more reliable, too. You can get a Romainian-made SAR-1 for $300 - $350 and have $$$ left over for mags & ammo. I wouldn't recommend a Mini-14 to anybody for any reason, not the least of which is that Bill Ruger sold out gun-owners in '94 by supporting the Assault Weapons Ban. In fact, I'd take a SKS over a Mini-14 and spend the rest on ammo, stripper clips, a sight tool, and a "Chinese Sports Bra"(chest pouch for stripper clips- holds 200 rounds on stripper clips). [grabbing a couple of beers and handing one to Cape_hunter]

Paul, it's plinker and a trunk gun for God's sake! Plus, it has all those things you mentioned. As does the AR15's. I just happen to like the Ruger better. Is that a crime?

You are not from Colorado by chance, are you?

I'll take an AR over a Ruger any day, little more money but you get what you pay for.

Did I say I was going for Match Competition Accuracy? So what that it only groups 3 to 4 inches at best. Who do you know that is only 4 inches wide?
